News Release – The Sound School Adult Education and Outreach Program
Subject: Habitat Paper for Winter Flounder Fishermen
The Connecticut Fund for the Environment CFE of New Haven, CT will provide regional bait and tackle stores copies of “Where Have All the Flounder Gone? for fishermen. During the period September to December, 2009, several hundred fishermen signed in to obtain copies of this winter flounder habitat review to be distributed by five bait and tackle stores in the research area of Niantic Bay, Old Saybrook and Clinton/Madison. This habitat history seeks to explain the disappearance of a popular recreational and important commercial fish, winter flounder, from our waters. The research paper, although in draft form and missing the annotated index for Niantic Bay, Quiambaug Cove, Wilcox Cove, Pattagansett River, Oyster River, East and Neck Rivers was presented in December of 2010 at the 12th Flatfish Biology Conference sponsored by NOAA (Northeast Fisheries Science Center Reference Document 10-21) at Water’s Edge, Westbrook.
The Connecticut Fund for the Environment, (142 Temple Street, 3rd Floor, New Haven, CT 06510) agreed this spring to photocopy several hundred copies so that they could be made available at the signup locations. The final paper with sections detailing local habitat histories for winter flounder should be available from the Sound School this December, 2012. Several fishermen have requested an update and although not in its final form, it is now being made available to interested fishermen as a draft.
Copies of the Winter Flounder Report will be made available (at no fee) to:
• Craig Andrews – Hillyer’s Tackle. 374 Rope Ferry Road, Waterford, Connecticut 06385
Mr. Andrews was actually a participant in the 1988 review of the Pattagansett Winter Flounder Habitat Study.
• Captain Morgan – Captain Morgan’s Bait & Tackle, 21 Boston Post Road, Madison, CT 06443;
• Peter Palmieri at Tidewater, 362 Boston Post Road, Westbrook CT 06498;
• Mr. Pat Abate, Rivers End Bait & Tackle, 440 Boston Post Rd, Old Saybrook, CT 06475;
• Ted Lemelin- Ted’s Bait & Tackle, 35 Clark Street, Old Saybrook, CT 06475.
Thanks again to the Connecticut Fund for the Environment for their help and assistance in making these reports available to fishermen.
Electronic copies available from Susan Weber (Adult Education and Outreach Coordinator) at The Sound School, New Haven, CT
