Sunday evening for about 3 hours a buddy and I took his canoe into Lake Kenosia. Last year in early April we were hammering the bass and crappie.

We went to the same spot we were getting them at last year, and pretty soon the bite began.

I stuck with a 7cm firetiger Rapala Original Floater while my buddy threw small shiners on 1 rod and a 5cm silver Rapala Original Floater on the other.

Topwater retrieve in shallow water around brush and weeds was the trick. The crappie and bass would come shooting out for the Original Floaters while lightly twitching in on the very surface or giving it a jerk before letting it pause on the surface for 2 or 3 seconds. Plenty of hits from crappies other than the ones we landed.

By the time it was almost totally dark out, we headed back to where we parked.

Water temps were in the lower and mid 50s with the route we took.

Total between the 2 of us was 12 bass and 28 crappie. My buddy hit 4 bass up to 1 3/4 pounds and I hit 8 up to 1 1/2 pounds. Crappies ranged from 8" to 11" and were all under a pound. I caught 16 while my buddy caught 12.

The crappie and bass were more active on the surface with the Original Floaters than the live shiners my buddy was throwing.

News I have about the crappie is while filleting them earlier today, I saw what was probably milt in a few.

Early spawning season for many this spring.
