Got out from 7:30am-1pm, would have like to have been on earlier. The bite was slow, but steady, with 12 bass between us for the day. All were over 12", and lunker went 3lbs 12oz. Everything was on either a spinnerbait or chatterbait in blk/blu or blk/red.

Nice fish! I got two largemouth bass on a big Bluegill patterned Persuader "Imaged Blade" 1/2 ounce double willow blade spinnerbait at Mansfield Hollow Lake today, but they were both small:

The first one was 13 inches long and the second one was 12 inches long. I expected to get bigger fish on such a big spinnerbait, maybe even a northern pike. Go figure.

Hey good job guys! so far I am mostly a soft plastic bait user. I would like to become more versitile in my techniques and the spinner bait has always been one I want to get good at. I bought many in many different blade and color paterns, but have only caught a few on them in the last couple years.

Are there any good tips you guys could give as to how I can effectivley throw these? (color, blades, where, how?)

So far I'm catching good numbers with small soft plastics at Morey and Bolton Middle, but I am dying to get something in the 3lb range. As soon as August hit, all my bass size catches cut in half! I'm hoping a spinner would generally get bigger bites. Any lakes that the "fall bite" quality size is better than allot of 1lbers and less?

I am far from a "spinner bait guy" myself. But ive dont a bit better with them this year, by throwing them only when the WIND is blowing, some kind of over cast, and paying attention to the bite. if thge fish seem to be hitting slower baits fast and hard you can sometimes catch more, faster with a spinnerbait. Try varying your retrieve. And the fall should be a great time to gain some confidence in them.

When throwing a big spinnerbait for northern pike, a steady, fast retrieve works best. For largemouth bass, I'm still not sure what works best. However, I agree with SkeetSkeet that they seem to work best on overcast, windy and even rainy days.

I used to prefer the big thump of Colorado blades, but double willow blades make a spinnerbait look like a school of fish when you reel it in fast. I really like the painted, fish patterned blades on the Persuader "Imaged Blade" spinnerbaits. I can't wait to try them out on Bantam Lake.

Yesterday, the bass would only hit our baits if they were burned a few inches below the water(which was surprising seeing that we had bluebird skies with no wind). Some hit a few cranks in, some hit it if I let it fall near pads, and some hit it if I burned it then twitched it like crazy then let it fall. Best thing to do is vary your retrieve, because some fish might be looking for a bait zipping above their head, and some might want to hit an injured bait. For colors, best thing to do is to buy a bunch of different ones, then try them all out. I usually throw some sort of white, but yesterday they seemed to prefer some sort of black. For blades, I was using a double willow, which I have good luck with when I'm burning the bait. I did real well with a willow/colorado in early spring.

Hey Pondhopper, I was in you're excact position last year. I was itching for big fish, but I only fished mostly soft plastics at Morey. Sure, it produced some small fish, but nothing big. Best thing to do is to try some new places. So far this year, I have been spending much less time at Morey, and more at other places, with much better results. Also try the jig, it's a big fish bait. Wink

I've been throwing a big 1/2 ounce spinnerbait, which is pretty heavy for my bass setup, so I usually don't use a trailer. It adds too much drag.
