Went out on my first fishing trip in CT since I moved out here. Live in Norwalk and don't know any spots, so I thought I would checkout Lake Candlewood.
Have no boat so Did some shore fishing by the neighboring pond. Was throwin some Senko's, 7" Watermelon Powerbaits and Rapalas not knowing what the bass respond to out here (I am from Iowa).
Fished from 11-4 and only had about 3 strikes. Discouraging to say the least, but at least I was back getting the feel of things with my bait caster. Basically just stayed in the shallows around fallen trees and brush. Saw some sizable bass just swimming around the top, but no action on buzz baits or poppers.
Any advice on what works well on the lakes out here for largemouth?
Also, any known spots around Norwalk/ Stamford so I don't have to drive up to Danbury? Was really hoping to find some closer spots so I could get in some action before work on the weekdays. If not, what are some solid spots in general for largemouth.
Keep in mind, I'm restricted to shore fishing

I live in Norwalk as well, and when I don't feel like loading up the kayak I go to the Sagatuck Reservoir. |

From the shore, throw a soft plastic frog over any beds of weeds or lilies that you can reach. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Will definitely have to checkout the Reservoir jomonkey, thanks for the heads up.
PECo, I haven't yet tried the soft plastic frogs, only the Rapala's with skirts (or legs i guess). I also see you are a huge fan of the wacky worm (I've read a lot of prev. posts on here). Wasn't bold enough to try that today. I honestly have grown up on the Texas rig, and only that and taught to swear by Powerbait worms and craws, black and blues. Always worked for us. So right now Im broadening my horizons.
Any of you guys ever get together for fishing outings? As i said I'm moving away from the standard Powerbait lures. Fishing with others usually helps me pick up on things. I understand structures real well, its just the actions Im struggling with (right now I'm using a St. Croix Med. Action).
Anyways, thanks for the heads up. Ill have to checkout the reservoir this week. Got the entire weekend to myself so hopefully by then Ill have a trip planned to checkout some lakes. Any suggestions for a weekend spot to try?

I will also recommend soft frogs across the top. It seems most effective in shallow cover areas and along side weed beds.I have been having great results throughout the summer with this strategy.
And just as PECo and probably many CT bass fisherman would, I strongly recommend the wacky senco. (especialy 5" gary yamamoto!!). Some of my buddies refuse to throw anything else and usually do VERY well on most days just throwing them around cover and letting them fall on a semi-slacked line.
Most natural colors will work well. I favor watermellon green with red flake, and brown with the bright orange tips.
Wish I could help you with some lakes in your area. I just havent fished down there yet. I hear Ball Pond is GREAT for largemoth and I believe its no further from you than Candlewood. _________________ Am I obsessed, or is it normal to play with my lures every night? |
