|
I'm a Mom near the beach in FFLD. Want to take my sons fishing tomorrow and catch something. I fished as a girl with my dad so I am not afraid to bait a hook or use the pliers if God willing, we catch something! Just curious as to what my best chance would be, where to go, and what to use. Thanks! |

Go catch snappers at the tide mill bridge in southport. Gett a snapper rig with a popper and a surgical tube or kastmaster. Jimmy-O will set you up. |

Thanks Crestdaddy! I had all that stuff already. We went to a slightly different location - near S Pine Creek. Slow at first, but as soon as the tide started coming in it was non-stop, they had a BLAST! Biggest one about 6 1/2. Over 30 caught, we lost track
Now they want to catch a striper after today and seeing your pics!! |

Glad they had fun! I wanna try that spot you went to for stripers one night soon...In the fall i can probably get you somewhere to catch some stripers in the early evening. It's just too hot to get them during the day from shore right now. |

I will say that after about a half hour of the snapper action, it seemed llike something was even driving THEM to shore, and I swore I saw a bigger fish break the water. I had an extra pole, and as luck would have it a large eel had washed ashore, so I set a chunk of it on a hook with a sinker and let it sit, nothing. Then I set it about 14 inches below a bobber and seemed like a few nibbles but can't be sure! Also, I really had no idea what I was doing!!
I know stripers feed in the dark usually, so maybe these were bigger blues??
Would LOVE to catch a striper!! |

Okay, NOW they want to catch porgy. And since they insist on keeping everythng they catch to eat, I wouldn't mind a break from coaxing tiny little filets of 6 and 7" snapper spines!
.
I know I need sandworms, I'll head down to Jimmy O's because I don't know what size hook. I'm thinking of going to Ash Creek, FFLD side, near marina. Any other suggestions so we don't get 'the skunk'?? LOL
After all this snapper action, its going to be hard to convince them that when you are fishing, MOST of the time you are NOT reeling in a fish
Also, would LOVE to get a striper this year myself!!! It's been years!! If you don't mind fishing with 'a girl' I'd love to go with you some night |

Firstly, Porgy have to be 10.5 inches to keep. And they have a lot of bones. For hook size, I would go with a size 2 or 4 hook. If you wanted to try that spot, I would recommend going on the BPT side, because it has a lot less rocks for your hooks to be stuck in. |

If they want to eat the fish they catch.. Def go for the black sea bass or blackfish(I think the seasons open). It's a little harder to fish for blackfish but def worth the time/hassle. Also, fluke fishing is perfect right now. Great fish to eat. |

OK - This afternoon while snapper fishing with my son about an hour before high tide.......it happened.......I landed a striper!!! ('')
Don't laugh - it was a whopping exact 12 " long. But it HAD STRIPES!! Yay!
My son was fishing with live shiners we had trapped and doing pretty well with the snappers. I was using a gold phoebe when he hit. (it was minor surgery to get it out to salvage his lips as he swallowed the entire tri-hook!)
After that I actually saw the tops of their heads breaking water with their mouths open feeding on shiners towards the shore.......VERY exciting!!! |
