When I was done fishing at Batterson Park Pond yesterday, I had only 20 feet of line left on my new light tackle setup, which was comprised of an Abu Garcia Cardinal 300Ui spinning reel and a 5-1/2 foot Berkley AMP light action rod. Today, after I respooled with six pound mono, I HAD to go out in the cyclone and make a few casts in the lower pond at Countryside Park. TurtleKiss (aka Kira) had wanted to travel somewhere to fish, but it was just too windy for me to go very far. The wind was blowing from the north at 20 miles per hour and gusting to 30. I stood on the west shore at the south end of the pond, and casted across the pond and the wind. I threw a silver Worden's Rooster Tail inline spinner with a black feather that DirtyDawg10 (aka Derek) had recommended. After 15 minutes, a slow retrieve got me a 14 inch rainbow trout:
As I was playing the fish, my line got caught in the roller bearing on the bail of the reel and broke. For the second time while using my light tackle setup, I had to hand-line a trout to shore. I decided right then that going cheap on the setup (i.e., about $70) wasn't worth it. So after I got the trout into the fridge, the setup went right back to Dick's Sporting Goods for a Daiwa Takara 3500 spinning reel and a seven foot St. Croix Legend medium light action rod. For about $50 more, it's a much nicer setup. I can cast a mile with it. And the trout was delicious! _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter!
