On the water by 7:10 off around 12:30. Water temps 62-64.No breeze to speak of in the beginning. For the first 2-3 hours, the water was very calm.
Caught a fish on my very first cast. I then explained the superstition to my son about catching a fish on the 1st cast meaning you were in for a rough day. I also told him, which he knows, that I don't believe in superstitions.
The next 8 casts proved me right as I caught 5 fish on my first 9 casts of the day and a total of 17 for the day.
Out of those first 5 two were quality bass. I'll post a couple of pics later. (my camera's still in the truck), one was a short (barely) and two were small pickerel. But it was a start to a good day of catching in addition to fishing! No more pickerel and only one more short so 13 keeper bass and after telling my son what I was doing he landed 6 if his own.
This week there were beds where there were none the week before, but the beds we could see clear enough to find fish had none on them which surprised me.I thought spawners would be on beds for at least a week. We initially fished what we refer to as drop shot alley from near the 6 mph buoy out to the top end of the island. The first 10 or so fish came from that area all before the tip of the island. Next we went out to the double island and pitched to light spots figuring they were either beds or stones and picked up a couple more. The wind had stirred up just enough by then to visibility more difficult. We shot down to the far north end picked up a single off a downed tree and finally fished the west side as we did the week before to finish the trip off.
Most fish 4-7FOW. All on drop shots. Josh was using a paddle tale worm in motor oil. I was using a finesse worm in black/grape. About half the fish were hitting the baits on the way down. The other half when the line was taught. Basically we counted it down to 5, tightened the line gave it a 7 count and repeated it all over again. |

Nice. I have to fish a deeper pond to try out that drop shot thing again. I also need to learn how to fish a jig off the bottom. I gotta get off these wacky-rigged worms! _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |
