Went to Candlewood for my first time with FordPerf. Launched out of Lattins cove and headed North up the lake. Not very familiar with the area, but we mostly fished up and towards the left around rocky points near various islands.
Got on the water at 7:35 and were fishing by 7:45am. Air temp cool, maybe 55 at the start getting to maybe 70 max later in the day. Skies were cloudy, overcast, with some light rain early on. No idea the water temp, felt luke warm, my guess is around 60-65. Skies remained cloudy and cool but the rain held off as the day went on
Tossed out various lures, including dark mini spinners, full size spinners of various color schemes ranging from dark to white to chartruse, various soft plastics, and the "lure of the day", a Mepps black fury #3 colored black and orange.
FordPerf had an off day, catching only 2 fish, one smallie and one sunfish both under a pound. I however, was on FIRE! Got about 12 fish maybe, I stopped counting. Mostly smallmouth, a couple largies, a perch, and a sunfish. Two biggest fish were smallies, one going about 3+ and the other 4 + or maybe even 5lbs. I'll post a pic of the biggest Smallie once I get home from work tomorrow so you can let me know what you guys think it weighed.
Speaking of weighing fish, I've got this P.O.S. spring loaded scale with that crappy lip hook. It's not accurate and any fish with actual size won't stay on that useless hook. What are you guys using to weigh your fish out when you're on the water??
Overall a great day on the water and I will definately be going back to Candlewood again, SMALLIES BEWARE!!! _________________ Keep 'em hooked and get 'em in the boat! |

Here is one pic of the big smallie I landed. Not a great pic, but you get the idea.
What you guys think it weighs? My guess is 4- 4.5lbs.

Nice smallie Bassgethooked. I use 2 different ones in my boat. For extreme accurate measurements for tournament use I use the X-Tools which mine is accurate to 1 ounce, had to send one back to manufacturer for an exchange because it was off by 3-4 ounces which was not acceptable by me. The X-Tools is great because it keeps track of what each fished weighed so you know which one to cull. For overall general use I have probably the best scale made which is my Boga Grips. Great scale tool for even gripping those big pikes in the river but they are only accurate to 1/4 pound increments but imho are very well made. Just gotta remember to put floats on them in case you drop them overboard. _________________ Eat, Sleep, Fish......I Love my SKEETER ZX225!!!

I have a berkley hand held unit good up to 50lbs. I believe it measures 1 ounce increments. _________________ Life's Short - Fish Hard - Take a Kid Fishing |

Gary, have you ever verified your scale with certified weights? What manufacturers claim and what you get are sometimes 2 different things. I put a 1 lb. weight and then a 5 lb. weight on my X-Tool and the variance had to stay at +- 1 ounce. Had one scale that read off by 2 ounces with the 1 lb. weight but was off by 4 ounces when I put the 10 lb. weight on. Shipped that right back to X-Tools and asked for one with better tolerances. Now reads 1/2 ounce at 1 lb. and 1 ounce at 10. Was a pain but for the money I paid for it the accuracy should be close. _________________ Eat, Sleep, Fish......I Love my SKEETER ZX225!!!

Yeah, crying because I'm laughing so hard at your bait size bass catches that you commonly refer to as lunkers! _________________ Eat, Sleep, Fish......I Love my SKEETER ZX225!!!

Thanks for letting me know what scales were out there. I checked out those Boga Grips online and they look pretty good, I'm thinking I might pick one of those up shortly.
Nick, yea that Mepps was killer. I bet in the spring it gets em going. It was sinking down about 3 FOW and those big smallies hit it so hard that it bent the lure, but I was able to bend it back and it was made well enough to stay true (which is something I can't say about my recently [read: last few years] purchased Rooster-Tails). _________________ Keep 'em hooked and get 'em in the boat! |

I wieghed a big largie at the zoar t we did a few weeks back and the berkley scale I have read 5 0 to 5 1. It wieghed in on the club scale 6-7hours later at 4.72. Thats 4-5 oz difference. Granted there were a few crayfish in the well but thats what ya get some times. |
