Down in Southern Connecticut we had some bursts of very torrential rain around the evening. Of course, that was exactly when I decided to go fishing. The body of water I fish has been drained for maitenance on a damn and the water is pretty low right now. Even working topwater and "weedless" plastics is bound to pick up a lot of weeds right now. Having already lost a depressing-to-mention amount of lures I figured I'd do some bait and wait, although the weather was far too ridiculous for the boat. Ended up casting some medium sized live mummichogs with a splitshot from the coast, trying to get into the weedbeds (which wasnt too hard to do). I'm there for about 20 minutes when the heavens open up and start dumping buckets of water down. I could barely see (I wear glasses) and start bringing my line in, but it was pretty heavy. I figured I was hooked up in a ton of weeds and was debating just snapping off the line (8 pound) and calling it a day. For whatever reason I decide to bring the line carefully, which took awhile. When I finally got the line in I managed to have caught three extra large salads worth of vegetation, but I saw a tail flopping on the end of it. At first it looked like a nice crappie so I dragged it onto the shore and started tearing off the weeds. This guy was underneath.
Unfortunately I didn't get any dimensions on the fish - 99.999% of the time I release bass of any size back, so I ran this into my cousin's house, took the picture, and returned him unharmed into the water. He slowly swam away to be caught another day. I ended up staying out there and caught another LMB which fought hard but ended up being a half pounder, and two small yellow perch. Not the largest fish ever, although it was particularly big for the lake and a nice surprise for a day I figured would be entirely unproductive. As for the picture reference, I'm 5'4 and the fish went from my man-nipple to the bottom of my zipper. |
