So as planned my buddy Eric and I took his boat onto Silver lake yesterday. We got the boat into the water around 5:40 and were fishing shortly after. When we got there the water was like glass, air temp around 75, and we had the place to ourselves.

We shot to the far end of the lake, towards the island. We worked the right of the island in the little cove of lilly pads/weeds....which we agreeed actually seemed to not be as bad as they were earlier in the season. Just like on the river we both went with black buzz baits as our lure of choice. Eric hooked into the first bass of the trip fairly quickly, followed by my first one about 5 casts later. I got a bite pretty soon after but missed the hookset. I'm still learning the feel of the topwater lures, which I have only started to use.

Then my buddy went on a little tear...he caught another 2 bass in that first spot. That put him up 3-1. We left the right side of the island and went to the left side, where again weeds and lillies were everywhere. Same lures, lots less luck. The fish were rising but weren't interested. Eric decided to try a popper for a while but not for long cause the treble hooks were weed traps. Back to the black buzz bait and he caught the only bass out of that hole...now he's up 4-1. We jet over to the train tracks but by that time a few more fishermen were out and generally in that area so we let them be.

Then we got a call from my other friend Mike at 8 pm and we picked him up at the launch and he jumped on. Once he got set we went over across the lake from the launch and worked the edge of the lake closer to the Turnpike. Using the same black buzz bait I'd been using all night I start to kill 'em. 3 bass in 10 mins. Now we're tied 4-4. Mike was hoping to catch up to us by using a black/blue mini spinner bait. He claimed to be getting bites and missing but I think at least a couple of those bites were weeds. He did land one and hooked him through the eyesocket. With a little gentle pursuasion the hook came out and we hoped the bass would be good.

Finished the night back in the first area we fished to the right of the island where I caught one final bass to put me up 5-4-1. Each bass we caught was a "chainlink" bass according to Eric....all 1.5-2.5 lbs...we were hoping to catch those 8lbers we've seen come out of there but not last night.

Great night on Silver. Topwater helped to avoid a lot of the weeds that crank and spinner baits might get caught up on. And once again the boat was key...considering usually I'm out on Silver in a canue it was great to get from spot to spot in seconds

I enjoy Silver lake.. I haven't seen to many 8lbers lately. 4-5 yes. but 8 ,not in a long time.

I think the bucket people have been eatting them.

Next time try a creature bait, I've been killing them lately with them. Black and red brush hog 4.5".

Nice job BassGetHooked. I go to Silver alot so I know that place like the back of my hand. What you guys were catching were the "cookiecutter" bass which are always plentiful there and is not a bad thing when bites are hard to get. If you want to get some 4-7 lbers out of there try fishing the "outside weed edges" rather than along the shore and try fishing sloooooow like weighted worms, tubes, senkos and jig'n'pig set-ups. Big bass are definitely in there as I have caught my share there over the years but they very seldom chase buzzbaits or fast moving lures. Because spinnerbaits and buzzbaits are lures that is the most easiest to fish there at Silver due to the weed problem bass have seen it all the time. Trying something different maybe that something that will entice a certain 6lber to bite. Remember, big bass did not get big by being stupid, they "learn" to avoid certain lures if they see it enough. My advice, try slowing down and see what happens, the results may surprise you.
Oh by the way, good report. Silver never disappoints me when I need a quick bass fix..

Thanks for the advice gentleman. I'm not sure when I'll be headed out to Silver next, but I will definately try a slower retrieve with a weighted senko or creature bait. Nothing wrong with a little top-water fun though, right guys?

Up early tomorrow to try Hamburg cove again...

You're right! Topwater is and has always been my favorite way to catch bass. Wether it's the first strike of the day or the 40th that visual excitement of watching the bass slam your topwater bait can't be described! Good luck at the Cove.
