I can't believe I left the camera home:(

I took my son fishing yesterday around 6 at a little pond in Newington. The place is loaded with sunnies, carp and cookie cutters with the occasional lunkers.

My son was using a Diago push button with a bobber and a worm. I baited him up and showed him how to cast (he just turned 3). Once he got it down, he caught about 5 sunnies in 10 minutes.

I had a pole and took one of the sunnies he caught and put it on a hook. I saw a 4lber that was chasing sunnies away from her bed. I tossed the sunny right by it and bam a 4lber hit and jumped out of water. My son went nuts. I landed it and let him check it out. He could fit his whole fist in the mouth. I dropped her back in and focased back on setting my son up.

I baited him up and he casted out. He was watching his bobber twitch when all of a sudden, it went totally under water. He was going nuts, I look and it was 1.5 bass. He pole is pretty cheap so it was like he was realing in a tuna. I landed it and he liped his first bass, then tossed him back.

It as awesome experience that i will remember the rest of my life. I am going to Cabelas and getting him a better combo because his Diago combo broke after his bass.

Any good suggestions for a 3 year old set up. I thinking a small ultralight spinning combo. I find the zebco's break a lot and can lead to more frustration than fun. I need like a 3.5' UL with a light weight spinning real. I considered a ice fishing setup as well but not sure how that would work.

Very cool Justin, good for your son! Hes starting to get to the age where you can get em hooked on fishing, then youll have an excuse to tell the wifey why you need to go fishing!

On another note, I found a great little pond near my work in NJ, went during my lunch break and snatched around 20 fish from shore in an hour all on crankbaits!!

Peter, I am gonna go without a boat this season. My father has a brand new 26' Express fishing boat in Stonington that I can use and I have a couple of friends I can go tuna fishing with. I probably fish mostly salt as I hate fresh water fishing from shore.

I plan on buying a boat over the winter. I hoping to pick up a nice 18' bass boat for under 10k. My wife goes back to work in September so we will finally be able to save some money. If I can find a deal for $500, I will hop on it otherwise I will be hitting the LIS for stripers and blues and hopefully get a couple of Canyon and shark trips.

I doing the Freeport Hudson Anglers Shark Tourney in June which should be fun.

I taught my son how to use a spinning rod/reel right from the start like my father taught me. The spincast stuff is junk and you'll spend more time fixing messes than fishing. 1/2 hour in the yard with a plastic practice plug is all your little guy will need to get the casting down.

I would go with a ML to M spinning rod with a quality reel. A good eample would be a Cabelas Pro-guide rod combo on sale at Cabelas this weekend. I bought my son a pro guide rod and used a reel that I no longer use.

All I know is that I get more excited when my kid catches a mediocre fish than when I catch a big'un. Life's wonderful moments.

Pauley, I agree with you on the push buttons, they lead to more frustration than fun IMO. I will check out the rod you mentioned.

Congrats on an awesome trip with the kid. I've seen some small spinning setups for small creeks that have 4ft rod. This might work for the little guy

I've seen some Ugly Stick UL's that run about 4-4'6". Also, Pfleuger makes a closed faced UL reel. It can't be too bad, they make excellent reels. Open faced spinning might be to complicated this early on for him. Obviously thats just an opinion, I don't know what he's capable of
