my dad and I decided to hit the river today, we launched from the thompsonville launch just north of the enfield dam. we started off in a large cove on the right side up from the launch. Water temp got warmer the farther we went in. it topped off at 65 in the back and in the river it was around 60. I ended up catching the first fish of the day which was my only fish of the day it was a large mouth about 2 lbs but it looked sick not sure what was wrong with it see pic's below. then a little while later my dad got a pretty good hit but wasent sure what it was, he thought it was a pike the way it was fighting. he finally got it close enough to the boat to net it and it ended up being a bowfin. the first one either of us have ever seen in person. we where both using 4" senkos. my dad ended up catching a small large mouth and a decent small mouth before we left.

Actually there's really nothing wrong with that bass. I've seen it several times. I forget what it's called or what the cause is of it, but it's no danger to the fish. Cool looking bowfin too. Nice report, sounds like a good day!

Yep true nothing wrong with that fish,just markings not sure why they get them.

From what I've read and heard via fisheries biologists, is that those markings are actually pigmentations from FLORIDA strain bass.
YES FLORIDA. It's pretty neat if you think about it. All the bass in the river can trace their ancestry back to Florida within the past few hundred years.

that bow fin is cool. are there fins always green like that? they have teeth?
i have caught lots of bass especially at congamond that have the same black spots. doesnt effect the fish at all from what i can tell.

I looked into the bowfin having green fins like that and from what I understood the males fins turn green like that right around spawn. As for teeth yes they do have some pretty nasty teeth.I would say there teeth size is between a trout and pickerel but it's not just one row they have multiple rows from what I could see.

Actually it is a pigment abnormality that can be caused by stress...perhpas dusty can weigh in on this.
