hit gardner 6am air temp 58 water temp 53.4 picked up a 1.3 large and a smallie rat in the first 1/2 hour jerkin 3ft of water couldnt hit another for three hours ??????? got some taps in 10ft but once that sun came out the bite died and so did i. the third one came in zero on a tube.nice lake i would love to hit it at night.

Not too bad for a first trip to that place when you don't know it at all!
Gardner can be a decent lake at times,..other days you'll swear there's nothing in there. I forgot to make a post about it, but I fished there last Friday when it was clear (but breezy) and did okay around shoreline rocks with a jerkbait and dropshot. After the sun got up in the sky they got very skittish and wouldn't touch the jerkbait anymore. I still managed to catch fish, but I had to let the dropshot sit for quite some time before I'd get bit!

i tried the dropshot with a jig on the bottom and a gulp on the hook got nothin! like you said first time on the lake it was fun to explore glad to see more bass management lakes in our state.

Just my opinion but here's a couple of suggestions for your dropshotting:
1) ditch the jig
2) use light line 4-6# with a rod to match
3) I've heard that gulp is good for smallies, but personally I've not had much luck with it for them and I think it has lousy action (too stiff) for dropshotting with almost zero appeal to largemouths. Just use a 4-5" straight-tailed finesse worm in brown or green and you'll be better off.

Im not very good at drop shoting i tried it once last year eight hours four big bites landed three with my partner for 9.7 2- smallies and 1- large it was an experience to say the least

once in a while i try to get out of my comfort zone jigs,grubs,and brushhogs.
