Arrived at Mondo Pond just after 5:15pm hoping for pickerel action. Skies were partly cloudy, air was cool, and winds were a steady 5 to 10 mph ranging from the east to the south, with occasional 12 to 15 mph gusts. Clouds increased and winds changed to east and northeast later.
Stuck mostly with topwater as I covered a few areas. 2 other lures I played with were silver shad JSR-4 and pearl grey shiner FLR-6, and also gave a 1/4 ounce red/black inline a few casts where I got into topwater.
Was surprised to not get any bass, yellows, or crappie to follow or hit the FLR-6 and also nothing hit it if I played topwater with it.
3 spots is where I got into some topwater with pickerel. Total was 5 explosions, lost 1, and had a nice one follow with many large swirls. The 3 lures that were grabbing their attention were bullfrog Rebel Frog R, threadfin shad Heddon Pop'n Image, and bullfrog Heddon Baby Torpedo. Retrieve with the 2 Heddons was give it a nice jerk and pause for 1 or 2 seconds. Retrieve with the Rebel was slow walk-the-dog.
Was surprised not to get any pickerel to hit the spinner in the same areas I got into topwater.
Hit the road just after 8. |
