I never realized how much the tide effects the river until we squeezed our 14' Tracker jon boat with a 9.9hp into Crow point Cove! the tide was coming in fast and literally sucked us in, barely getting the motor and troller up in time. We fished for about 2-3 hrs. and realized we must have come in at the end of high tide because we found ourselves in 3" of water! Panicked, we oared out and got sucked right back out of the cove! Weird and silly! Anyway, just a few LMB on a spinnerbait, and catfishes on KVD Finesse worms drop shotted. Allot of smallmouth in the main stem also on drop shot rigs with yum dingers. We left from Riverside Hartford and it took 50 min. to get back w/ the 9hp. Almost capsized when water skiers went by twice. 4ft. waves! I think we'll stay above Wethersfield Cove from now on! |

Thanks for the report! I always think of Crow Point Cove (aka White Oaks) as a kayak-only kind of place. That channel can dry up at high tide.
What kind of catfish did you get with the drop shot? To me, catfish are always a surprise. I caught a channel cat with a drop shot at Lake Lillinonah on 07/30:

Well, good luck with the big catches at Winchester! I hope you get the "hit", instead of the "miss". _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

CD is correct Phil. Channel cats are much darker on the back and more of a light gray on the bottom. Channel cats are hardly found in Lilly and Zoar but white cats are common. |
