Late Wednesday night NWS was talking about light northerly winds with the chance for that occasional 12 or 15 mph gust. High tide for Black Rock was scheduled for 5:36pm Thursday so I decided to head out. Got to the boat ramp around 3:30pm to find gusty west winds.
Didn't stay at the ramp due to a crowd there and also the ridiculous west winds.
Headed over to the Fayerweather jetty to find the Black Rock Harbor side loaded with 2 foot waves and the beach side mostly calm. Walked out to a certain area and casted the SSP-9 out there facing the beach. First cast and I had a swirl right in front of me and saw what looked like a snarbor come up and go back down. Later I had an explosion and lost what felt like a snarbor. Saw a few swirls and breaks here and there but never got any more swirls or explosions. Tried throwing the FLR-10 and CNM-9 but nada.
Headed over to Breezy Point to find 2 to 4 foot waves and white caps all over the place. Birds were working an area off the southwestern corner of Breezy Point. Gave it a few casts with the SSP-9, XRW-9, and CNM-9 but nada. Saw a local surfcasting buddy there who later met me at the jetty.
Went back over to the Fayerweather jetty seeing that was the only spot that had nice waters. Arrived there when the tide was just starting to head out. The surfcaster who I saw at Breezy Point met me there later. I threw a number of lures and the buddy tried throwing a Cotton Cordell Pencil Popper and an SP Minnow. He only had 1 hit on the SP Minnow by what he said was either a small blue or a big sea robin. He headed back to shore as I stayed out there but I still didn't get anything.
Checked out Breezy Point again seeing winds were starting to die and the tide was going out but it was still more of a plugging game there.
Checked out Remington and saw 2 usualls there who said people were catching lots of small stripers and one of them was catching tailors on topwater before the evening crowds arrived. There were too many chummers for me to cast.
Hit the road around 8pm |

Tough day,...I would try a few casts at the windy spots next time,...those winds can push the bait up against the shoreline at times!!
ps: Okay I'll bite,...what's a snarbor? _________________ "If people concentrated more on the really important things in life there'd be a shortage of fishing poles."
