Friday around noontime I headed down to the city bus terminal with waders on and carrying my 7'6" Inferno/Penn Fierce 3000 setup with a tackle bag. Hopped on the #10 bus when it arrived and later got to Short Beach around 1:30pm. Fished for about 3 hours. High tide for Sniffen's Point was scheduled for 2:11pm.
Stuck with a FLR-10 for a while as I moved around looking for the fish. One spot produced 2 schoolies but then I come to another spot as if it was where many were cruising.
Landed a schoolies every 5 to 10 casts with the FLR-10 and also tried playing topwater by throwing a SP-9 and XRW-9, which resulted in 2 schoolies and 3 followers on the XRW-9.
Once it got closer to sunset and tide was heading out, the bite seemed to have died and wasn't seeing anymore loons going underwater.
Never saw any signs of shad or herring and the only thing I heard about any bigger stripers was somebody landed a 26"er.
Total was 9 schoolies up to 20" and lost 2 with only 1 other hit. It seemed like every time I'd get a hit I was easily able to set the hook on them unless it was topwater.
11/22/13 marks the latest time of the year I've caught a fish on topwater while surf fishing. |
