First of all,let me say that the day was GREAT!It was the leaving that was terrible.....I was in the process of unloading and dropped my camera phone in the water
If i can i will try to retrieve the pictures at a later point.
With that said.........I ended up with a 34 inch...16 lb striper and a 32 inch..14 lb gator blue that fought WAY better than the striper.
On my way out of the Lieutenant river i snagged about a dozen bunker
then, headed out into the CT river.I threw a chrome super spook as i made my way down to Great Island where i anchored just off the rocks.
On my way there i had 4-5 swipes at the spook but,no takers.I anchored for an hour and used bunker chunks as i threw the spook around.Only had 1 big runoff on the bunker there so,i decided to move on.The tide had now been going out for 2 hours and when i reached my next stop i could smell fish in the air.
I tossed my spook out and half way back i hooked into a striper. As it came to the side of my kayak i could see 5-6 others following it that were just as big and bigger.I tossed my spook out again and WHAM another came crashing out of the water after it.This one i lost when it spit my lure about half-way in.i had now drifted about 100 yards and pedaled back to where i caught the first one. This time i anchored and threw a chunk one way and threw the spook the other. As i was working the spook a fish hit the chunk and bend my pole right over to the water.I grabbed my rod and felt a big fish.As it neared the side i saw that it was a VERY BIG striper.Then,snap.....there went my steel leader. It broke right at the swivel.
I retied a new one, baited up and i couldn't even put it in the pole holder before another fish hit.I went to set the hook and it felt light.I reeled in and my bait was gone.Again,i rebaited and made a cast.As my chunk was out i started with the spook again.I made a cast and twitched it a couple of times then,a big explosion that sent my spook flying through the air. When it landed another explosion and it went flying in a different direction. After 8-9 casts and just as many explosions i hooked into another striper that ended upcoming off because i was so pumped up and tried to horse it in.
as i retied my spook because of the streched line,my chunking pole bent over and caused my pole holder to squeak and twist. I grabed my rod and could feel a very strong fish.I figured it was a really big striper so i picked up anchor and drifted while i played the fish. After almost 10 minutes i was able to see that it was a big blue and not a striper. As i brought it to the side of my kayak it coughed up the bunker chunk which was instantly grabbed by 1 of the 2 other blues that were following.
By now i had drifted and was pulled almost 300 yards from where i started and i headed back to where i started.I re-anchored and threw out a chunk and started the top water again.Another hour went by and only had a couple swipes at the spook. It was now 11:45 and i deceded to call it a day.I dropped my motor in and headed back to the launch.Thats when i made the original post.I talked to a couple other fishermen along the way that had some action with blues on atoms. Then was flagged down by another fisherman that just wanted to look at my kayak and take pictures of it.
When i finally made it back to the launch it was now 12:30 and as i was unloading i pulled my waders up and popped my phone out of it's holder and into the water
Hopefully i will go and pick a new one up tommorow. My other one is in pieces in a bowl of rice trying to dry out.If it doesn't work after that AND after being on the heater all the way home.

Congrats on a crazy day! I heard from forums and tackle stores that this year is particularly bad for stripers and blues. My excuse for not getting much fish. despite trying... SO encouraging to hear your great report! |
