When mep21 (aka Mark) and I went to check out the ponds at Nod Brook WMA, last weekend, we found that the entire area was closed for a dog club to run field trials. Rolling Eyes I had a few hours to kill, this afternoon, so I decided to take a kayak and check out the lower (aka north) pond. It was raining lightly when I arrived, but pretty much stopped when I launched in El Habañero near the culvert in the southwest corner of the pond at 2:35 pm. I tied on a Bullfrog Zoom Horny Toad on a Number 4 Gamakatsu Offset Shank Worm EWG Hook and headed counterclockwise around the pond. It wasn't long before I got a hit on the frog in the middle of the south shore:

Whoo Hoo! I know it was just a 13 inch long largemouth bass, but it was a keeper. And I made a new little friend:

I headed up the east shore and banged it with the frog. I never get much action along that shore, so I wasn't surprised that I didn't get anything. However, as I worked my way around the shallows in the center on the north end of the pond, I was surprised that I didn't get even a swirl on the frog. Confused When I hit the north shore and turned to enter the shallows in the northeast corner of the pond, it began to rain:

I suspect that the sound of my paddling frog got lost in the noise of the rain hitting the surface of the water, because I got absolutely nothing with it. Confused I headed south along the east shore and swapped out the frog for a wacky rigged Green Pumpkin/Red Flake five inch Senko as I entered the canal. It wasn't long before I caught a couple of more largemouth bass. The problem was that they were getting smaller and smaller. The first was 12 inches long and the second was only 11 inches long:

I worked my way all the way to the end of the canal, before the rain stopped falling. When the rain stopped falling, the fish started biting:

This 16 inch long, 1.96 pound largemouth bass ended up being my lunker for the day. 10 minutes later, as I was making my way out of the canal, I got a 13 incher, too:

Almost as soon as I got back to the shallows in the northeast corner of the pond, the rain began to fall, again, but even harder than before. Confused I decided to just paddle straight back to the culvert and get off of the water. It was still pouring rain when I put out at 5:20 pm. If it rains during the kayak fishing tourney on Saturday, I'll have no chance at all to win. Rolling Eyes

Welcome aboard, Nelson.
1. Yes, you can load kayaks just about anywhere on public land.
2. Yes, you can use a kayak to fish almost any river or lake with public access. You can launch a kayak at a boat launch ramp, although it's best to launch off to the side, if trailered boats are present. If you're unsure whether a river or lake has public access, look it up in the 2013 Connecticut Angler's Guide: http://www.eregulations.com/connecticut/fishing/
3. You can apply online for a Connecticut fishing license here: https://ct.outdoorcentral.net/InternetSales
