I made the mistake of drinking coffee after noon, yesterday, so I was unable to get to sleep until after 4:00 am, this morning. I woke up at 6:30 am to make sure that my daughter put the garbage can out by the curb on her way to the school bus stop and decided to try my best to stay awake. I figured that paddling a kayak would help, so I loaded El Habañero into my Jeep and drove out to Little Pond in Litchfield. I intended to park at the end of South Lake Street and wheel El Habañero down the boardwalk to the pond, but the road was blocked at Gallows Lane:
I drove down Whites Wood Road to the canoe launch on the Bantam River and got on the water at 9:00 am:
I intended to paddle directly up the river to Little Pond, but couldn't resist fishing along the way. It ended up taking me two hours to get there. I threw a wacky rigged Watermelon & Lemon Laminate five inch Senko, a wacky rigged green/red flake five inch Gander Mountain Senko knockoff and a Bullfrog Zoom Horny Toad, which got me a short largemouth bass, a rock bass and a chain pickerel, respectively:
As I approached Little Pond, a steady five to 10 mile per hour wind blew from the west-northwest. I began throwing the Horny Toad over the lily pads that ring the shore of the pond in the shallows. At 11:05 pm, I finally set the hook on a decent fish:
Whoo hoo! The largemouth bass was a solid 16 inches long and weighed two pounds, five ounces. 15 minutes later, I caught another 16 incher:
And 30 minutes after that, I caught a 17 incher
In between largemouth bass, I caught or shook off several more chain pickerel. After I caught the 17 incher, the wind rose and began blowing at a steady 10 to 15 miles per hour:
I HATE fighting the wind! At 12:42 pm, I caught a 13 incher:
Of course, after catching four keeper largemouth bass, my goal became to catch a fifth for a full five fish bag. It took a while, but shortly before 2:00 pm, I got it:
Whoo Hoo! My lunker largemouth bass was 19 inches long and weighed three pounds, 10 ounces. Immediately after I caught it, I stowed my gear and paddled directly back to the launch. I put out from the water at 2:20 pm. Hopefully, I'll be able to stay awake until after dinner _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter!

The pads are already so thick in there that it's hard to throw anything other than a topwater frog, especially since the wind was flipping them around. I almost switched from the Zoom Horny Toads to a Koppers Live Target Hollow Body Frog for the extra weight for casting and buoyancy for staying on top of the pads. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter!
