So, we've all heard the many nicknames for our friend, the bluefish. Would anyone care to venture a list of exact sizes (in weight) for the many nicknames? Trying to figure out what nickname size class my first bluefish of the year falls into. The Names I've heard (feel free to add any I forgot):

Snapper
Cocktail
Tailor
Harbor
Chopper
Gator
Gorilla

I usually just call them by their size (10 pounders or whatever). When my eel comes in all mangled, I have a different set of nicknames for them. Mad

Snapper=YOY anup to a pound
Cocktail=1-3lbs
Taylor=1-4lbs
Harbor=3-6lbs (inshore caught)
Chopper=5-8lbs
Slammers=8-10 lbs
Racers=4 to 8 pounds but long and thin by the end of that season they will become choppers
Gorilla/Gator/Monster/Pig= any blue over that 11 pound mark
Some of these overlap but it is becasue they are terms used in other parts of the east coast

Here's 2 YouTube videos I LOVE that show the aggression of those bigger gators, gorillas, and speed demons. You'll also get to see the size.

Thanks for everyone's input. My post was more a joke than anything, to illustrate how silly and undefined the nicknames are, and how the sizes change by the person. That said, my first bluefish this year was a slammer/racer hybrid by iverson's list, and a large chopper by Michael's list. 9 lbs, long and skinny Very Happy

Now, what would be considered a "cow" striped bass? Laughing

Depends how long the angler's arms are and how close the camera is held to the fish!

Your sighting from the boat reminds me of some videos and stories striper trollers have put up.

Trolling tube and worm in June as bluefish are getting thicker in the waters. They get a hit and feel it's a smaller striper. As they get it closer to the boat the see huge swirls behind the fish. Right as they get the striper to the boat, a gator blue grabs the striper by the tail.
