Decided to hit Mashapaug before the summer season begins since the place becomes a zoo. Also if you plan on going there on weekends after Memorial Day there is a fee to enter the park. The other reason I decided to go is Cabela's Fish for Millions program has a tagged fish in there.
Got to the lake at about 9:40 AM and found only two trucks with trailers in the parking lot and two park workers cleaning the park. It was about 60 degrees out with blue bird skies. The forecast called for wind gusts up to 23 MPH and when I arrived it was every bit of that. Talked to a husband wife team that was coming off the water in a little tin boat with motor and he report to having two fish, but lost them close to the boat. He reported that the wind was bad turning the boat around. After helping them get off the boat, after the boat moved away and the wife almost fell in, I launched.
I had planned on trying to drop shot, but due to the wind knew I would have to stay in the coves. After going through the narrow protected channel from the launch I went to the fist cove to the left. I threw a F-7 gold Rapala and a green cray fish Dives to 5 Rapala and a green 5" Senko. Began throwing Senko and got nothing. I began throwing tight to shore and had a hit and got a 2 pound large mouth. Got a second one in the same are also tight to shore 2.5 lbs. Both were caught about 6 inches from shore.
Decided to move to a cove in the northeast corner, but when I got there found a couple already there fishing from kayaks so I decided to move around the corner when I caught my personal best last year. Fished the are for a while with nothing and decided to go to the back side of some islands. While paddling out saw a bass on a bed so I decided to give it a try. First cast he picked it up, it was barley hooked, but I got it in 3 lb bass.
Went over to some islands and wile paddling there marked a lot of fish suspending at about 11' in about 22' of water. Made some casts tight to the island and caught to Smallmouth bass. Nothing else was caught got off the water at about 1:30 PM. Water temp at start was 60 degree when I got off it water 61.9 degree. Did not see many beds maybe five at best.
