I didn't get any fishing in on the weekend so I decided that it was about time to go again. I headed to Lower Bolton Lake around 7, and at my spot it was only me and some nice middle aged guy who told me he caught a 4 pound bass 20 minutes earlier. Then, on my second cast, I let the bait sink, reeled in the slack, and had just put my rod down when it immediately doubled over and started bouncing like crazy. I set the hook and a pretty good fight ensued. It was a channel cat that weighed exactly 2 pounds, and was about 20 inches long. Not huge, but the biggest of the year so far for me!



In the next hour and a half, I didn't get any more action from the channel catfish. Many of them must have been in the traps that were set up to gauge their population in the lake. I did catch 3 yellow bullhead, however. Not a bad day!

How common are yellow bullheads in CT?

I have only caught yellow bullheads at Lower Bolton. I know they are yellow bullheads, however, because of the very light-colored chin barbels. I've never caught them anywhere else, and it seems to me that brown bullheads are much more common around here.

Brown bullheads are very common in CT, whether it be larger lakes or small shallow ponds. I have heard some people say there are a few places that hold yellow bullheads.

Awesome! Guess I'm going to have to keep hitting Lower Bolton for catfish when I can. What were you using or did I miss that?

I was using nightcrawlers that time but I have also had success with cutbait recently.
