last year at this time the smallies were in pre spawn and with 2 weeks of 85 degree temps were on their way to to the beds in the water on the croton shed! i started pike fishing in the boat the 2nd week in march up in my pike spots on lilli and did well very well - i took a ride up to check it out on the falls road and the ice is solid! - not complaining just getting antsy - to my way of thinking the spring fishing last year (april & may) was the pits! - so i am hoping that a winter here in new england is just what the doctor ordered for some GREAT spring fishing!

Last year around this time I was already starting to hit a few bluegills and bass at my usual ice out pond. Then came 3/6/12 when I was able to start fishing the private pond and was hitting the jumbo perch like crazy and catching a number of 2 to 4 pound largemouths.

Drove to Newtown Bait n Tackle. Lake Zoar was frozen sold at the dam and as far as you could see.

Trout fishing should be a hell of a lot better this year too. Wasn't easy last year at all.

We're waaaay behind 2012 as far as the weather and fishing goes. In January and February 2012, I fished open water in my kayak in the ponds at Nod Brook WMA, which is in Simsbury. Sure, I also went ice fishing, but good ice was hard to find. Burr Pond had four inches, at best. Tyler Lake was the only place that I thought had safe ice (i.e., five or more inches). On March 4, 2012, I paddled Squantz Pond and soon began fishing open water in the coves of the Connecticut River. Hamburg Cove, in particular, was already producing sunfish, yellow perch, white perch, chain pickerel, largemouth bass and striped bass. Yesterday, TurtleKiss (aka Kira) and I marked one fish with the finder in Hamburg Cove. Only ONE! Shocked On March 23, 2012, I was fishing in a Hawaiian shirt:

Sorry, ice fishing guys, but I'll take a mild Winter and an early Spring every time. Very Happy

Even though I enjoy ice fishing, I agree with you about taking a mild winter and early spring. I'd rather throw lures in open water.
