Well, this IS a real issue that has to be addressed, although I agree with those of you who think that Maine's proposed approach isn't appropriate. Kind of like the Obama Administration's view of the Second Amendment. But that's a discussion for another thread. Anyways, back to my point. Here are a caption and a photo from the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Facebook page, dated October 23, 2012:
Quote: | Earlier this summer, while conducting a bass electrofishing survey on southern Lake Champlain, VT F&W fisheries biologists discovered this pile soft plastic lures at the bottom of the boat’s livewell, coughed up by the bass collected that night. These types of fishing lures are typically salted and scented, and fish will often swallow these lures, even when found lying on the bottom of the lake. Fish cannot digest plastic and have difficulty passing such lures, which may result in a clogged stomach and malnourishment. As a reminder to anglers, please ensure your torn and used soft plastic lures do not end up overboard where fish may ingest them. Always discard them in the trash. We appreciate your help! |
That's why I never throw used soft plastics into the water. Pack out your baits, people! _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

My boss gives me the Maine Sportsman monthly paper after he reads it. Let me tell you if it is any indication of how Mainers feel about bass. This ban will pass with barely a sigh. |

See PeCo's point and agree with both his and the VT biologists final statements. Some common sense has to prevail in Maine, or they will loose business in a state that relies heavily on outdoor recreational tourism. Bass and other fish certainly eat a lot of crap that we make, and they can't digest. I don't know how many fish the VT biologist zapped to get that pile. I just haven't seen any credible evidence that this is causing harm to the fish populations to warrant such drastic actions. Are they seeing declining stocks due to this issue? More companies are making biodegradable soft plastics. I use Gulp sandworms as often as real ones. I suspect many of those worms still sit in stripers' stomachs for a while. I'm 100% in favor of practicing preservation techniques that avoid undo harm to fish and improve release survivability, but a ban on soft plastics just doesn't make sense to me. Hate to say it, but if we are really against doing any harm to fish, we should find another hobby. _________________ RNA - It's in my blood.

I agree with you Peco, everyone has to do their part to keep things clean and never disgard anything into the water.
We may be only fishing with nightcrawlers and bobbers soon...
