Fishing buddy and I stopped at 2 places for ice fishing today. First stop was Stillwater around 11am. This was our first time there.
We set up in 5 to 13 FOW to the right of the launch. Medium shiners on the tip ups were 1 to 4 feet off the bottom with one of buddy's being just under the surface.
I got 3 flags and buddy got 4. 2 of mine were perch run offs and the other seemed to be a largemouth from the damage done to the bait. Buddy landed a small pickerel on 1 and and had what seemed to be largemouths damage the bait twice on the one that was just under the surface.
As for jigging, Buddy tried jigging with a gold Kastmaster rigged with a spike. I stuck with a chrome blue Jigging Rap W-3 with no bait rigged. Buddy had no hits and wasn't robbed. I had 4 taps in a hole next to where buddy got his pickerel. They felt like perch and sunnies.
Around 2pm we hit the road and headed for Dog Pond for the evening bite. We were set up in 6 to 10 FOW.
Buddy had a three way rigged which went up twice but seemed to be the weight of the shiners doing it. He had 1 other flag. I got 1 flag which was a 15" 1 1/2 - 2 pound largemouth.
After putting a shiner back onto that setup and dropping it down, I was still holding onto the line and fish on. 1 to 1 1/2 pound pickerel. Buddy found a keeper perch on one of his tip ups while we were picking them up. His flag never went off.
As for jigging at Dog, Buddy was using a silver florescent chartreuse Jigging Rap W-3 with a mousie. I stuck with the chrome blue W-3 with no bait.
At one spot I had a few bumps and landed an 11" largemouth. Buddy wasn't getting any hits. I then moved to a different spot which was where the action was. Jigged up and landed a total of 6 crappie and 1 bluegill. Lost a nice 2 pound or so largemouth at the hole. Had a number of bumps too.
Buddy jigged next to me but wasn't getting any action with his Jigging Rap even with a mousie on it. We switched spots and I jigged up 1 of the 6 crappie there and had a few bumps. He only got 1 hit at the spot I was originally at. He switched over to the same color I was using and decided to follow the pattern I was using. He never jigged up anything and hardly got any hits while I was into it. It was either jigging pattern or I was at the perfect depth right on top of the fish.
Headed back to the car around 5:30pm. |

BTW- As for ice, Stillwater had 4 inches with 2 inches of each color. Also about an inch of slush on top. Dog had 4 to 6 inches with 3 inches of black under 1 to 2 inches of white. |
