I came across this article on a different site.

This is a line item in the Governors budget to close a hatchery. Please read. http://www.ct.gov/opm/lib/opm/budget/2014_...development.pdf

CT. Fisheries info 2013

Please read through this as the closing a hatchery probably has a broader impact than most of us realize.

Information on recreational fisheries and DEEP hatcheries in CT • Freshwater and Saltwater fishing in CT: * - 251,000 state residents take 5.4 million fishing trips and spend $198 million per year * - 51,000 non-residents take 457,000 fishing trips and spend $45 million per year in CT. • Recreational fishing supports over 4,400 jobs in CT. • Trout are the most sought after gamefish species in Connecticut attracting approximately 2.1 million fishing trips per year and generating ~$50 million per year in annual expenditures having a net economic impact of $67.5 million per year. • Approximately $2.8 million in annual license revenue is generated by trout anglers in CT. • Approximately 100 lakes and ponds and over 200 rivers and streams are stocked annually with trout. • The overall benefit to cost ratio for Connecticut’s Trout Program is 25 to 1. • DEEP’s three hatcheries produce approximately 750,000 catchable size trout per year. Three species (brook trout, brown trout and rainbow trout) and one hybrid (tiger trout) are raised. • Quinebaug Valley Trout Hatchery (Plainfield) is the state’s largest facility and is responsible for producing 65-70% of the trout stocked. Burlington Trout Hatchery produces 20-25% and Kensington Hatchery produces ~10%. • Burlington and Kensington hatcheries also produce special strains of trout and salmon for the state’s premier fisheries (ex. Trout Management Areas on the Farmington and Housatonic Rivers; broodstock salmon fisheries in the Naugatuck and Shetucket River and some lakes), and for school environmental education programs (Trout in the Classroom and Salmon in the Classroom – approximately 80 – 90 schools each and over 6,000 students each year). Burlington also serves as a transfer station for holding trout from Quinebaug prior to stocking into waters in western Connecticut. • Approximately 2,000 broodstock salmon are produced at Kensington Hatchery and stocked annually into the Naugatuck and Shetucket Rivers and a few lakes. These fisheries attract anglers from around the northeast to the only remaining Atlantic salmon fishing in southern New England. These fisheries attract 5,000 – 7,000 trips per year.

For the past 5 years the state has been talking about closing the Burlington and Kensington Hatcheries but they still haven't done it. I hope they don't.

I know they are no longer stocking as many of the large brood-stock salmon. They are not getting a good return number from the ones released into rivers.I heard they were planning on stocking more smaller ones instead.1-3 lbs. They were planning on sea-run browns and more sefforlen browns(for breeding tiger trout)

Who knows if they will do it?Like you said Michael.
It is being proposed AGAIN.Which leads me to believe that it could be only a matter of time until it happens.
I just don't like it.
Set slot limits!
Reduce creel limits!
More catch and release!
Permits for specific species!
Shorter fishing seasons!
Higher license fees including for the ocean that they don't stock.

Bad signs ahead!
