A fisherman I know from Seaside Park sent me a text earlier saying tonight he caught what he considered a blackfish sea robin hybrid. He said it was making barking sounds. Found out it was a monkfish he caught on a chunk of mackerel here along the shore of western sound.
Anybody ever catch a monkfish while chunking along shore? How common is that, esp in the western sound? |

| Weird...never seen anyone catch one before. I have seen an Atlantic Wolffish caught before though. |

I have read of a few of them being caught in the NIantic Bay area this year.
But they where caught on a boat also.

Could have been an oyster toadfish. They're from the sculpin family, as is monkfish. they don't get nearly as large, but they look a LOT like a monkfish does. Big difference is the teeth. Google it. Btw, theyre delicious, just not much meat. We get em a lot, and the first time we thought they were monkfish too

The Oyster Toadfish always weird me out, mostly the texture of their bodies. It's like holding a piece of...you know.  |

Monkfish is awesome! Poormans lobster or used to be, have no idea what it is per lb anymore. Red Lobster sometimes has it grilled as a special, if your ever there get it and I guaranty you wont be disappointed!

| Local Monkfish runs $7.99-$9.99lb. when it's around. The CT caught ones always seem to come in a lot smaller, but yes, still delicious. |

they are pretty common, only caught one from shore but many from boats while fluke fishing. they are ugly as hell
