I hadn't fished in over a week and knew I probably couldn't get out over the weekend. So the only option I had was to skip work.
So Friday I decided to take the kayak out and try Wrights cove (Pecauset pond) off the river in Portland
The weather was perfect and still overcast when i got there so I thought it would be a pretty productive day. But the bite wasn't all that great and was only able to pick up 2 bass, one on a wacky rig senko and one on a ribbit frog.
All the bass were no bigger than the one in the picture.

Since there wasn't much action I decided to try the mattabassett. On my way out of the cove I tied on a small rapala and was able to pick up 2 more LMB and a SMB.

When I got to the Mattabassett, the water was pretty deep so i tied on a Rapala J-SR5 or 7, not sure which and picked up a smallmouth at the mouth of the Mattabassett

I started working my way into the Mattabassett and hooked into a decent pike just short of 30 inches.

2 casts after that, i hooked into another decent pike about 28 inches but lost it while trying to grab it on the side of the kayak.
I fished for about another half hour before i called it quits.

You can take a right onto grove street in Portland off of Rte 66 and launch. They usually charge boats 15.00
The water did get down to 2 to 3 feet in siome places but it was also almost dead low tide.
i don't know of any where else to try and launch around there.

That's a good launch. I launch there all the time if you are referring to Portland Boat Works. They only charge $15.00.

How was the water level at Wrights? I think my boat may be a bit big to get in but last I checked it was super shallow.

I got into Wrights Cove during the outgoing tide and it was pretty shallow plus all the trees that are down on the way in there make it tough.

I've seen small boats in there but you have to do a lot of manuvering to get through all the fallen trees.

Nice, Dave. I haven't been in the Mattabesset River since the Spring, when I couldn't buy a fish in there. Hopefully, I'll have a chance to check it out, again, soon.
