I took a couple of my former students from my recently graduated class of 8th graders on a fishing trip to Lakeville. We were in search of bass, but the bass were too busy hiding from the weedcutters as both were in action all the time while we were there.

We arrived and were on the water by 8:00. We fished the N.E. weedline heading out to the flat beyond the island. We picked up some pickerel with both Becca and Ben landing them. They were having fun landing fish off of the drop shot rigs I had set up for them. (zoom black grape finesse worms) Ben even landed a rockbass from about 18' of water. Becca wound up getting 5 pickerel from that initial track and one was pretty good size, but it was very aggressive in the net and cut itself up pretty good so she wouldn't pose for a picture with it and instead posed with this smaller one. The episode did get her the nickname "The Mauler" to go along with her cute calling for the fish "here fishy fishy fishy."

Ben landed for fish for the day here's him with a pickerel.

We were going to head out to the points off the flat but the weedcutter beat us to it and then a second one came out and began working on the humps off that area so we headed back north and west and fished off that extended weedline and the deeper area in the back with no takers. We even tried shallower water with various baits and had NO takers bass or otherwise.

So, around noon instead of heading back to the shoreline and hunting for more pickerel, they decided to pull off the water and head for highland in search of some bass and a lake where at least we could run the main motor to create a breeze to combat the heat. It was wicked hot on the lake today!

We spent a couple of hours at Highland, with Ben and I doing the fishing. Becca fished a little and was done and looking forward to a nice nappy when she got home which is where we headed to a little before 4 of course the ride home included stops at Dairy Queen and McDonalds yes in that order. These two are great kids, which I thoroughly enjoyed in class and as their coach (girls basketball and boys baseball). It was a lot of fun aiding them by tying set ups, netting fish, helping with casting and just watching them enjoy themselves fishing. I wished we have more action and that they would have hooked into a few bass. But alas the only bass a nice 2.5# one came on my drop shot in about 10' on a weed edge off perch rock at Highland.

Sorry about the size of the pictures. I reduced them and re-uploaded them but for some reason they are still coming out large.

Cool deal Walt. Nice job taking the kids out. To bad the bass didn't cooperate but I'm sure it will be a day they remember for a long time.
