I agree with Rando on the St.Croix Triumph rod. My kayak beater rod is a 7ft Triumph and I love the thing. I have it paired with an discontinued Ardent XS600 6:3:1 gear ratio baitcasting reel. One of my favorite setups and I put this setup together for abuse and both the rod and reel are holding up wonderfully. The triumph is a great rod and it holds well against all my Premiers, Avids, and Wild River St.Croix baitcasting rods. If you still didn't buy the Lews reel look around ebay and amazon for the Ardent XS600 there still around and you might find them for $100. The best baitcasting reel I have ever used hands down. I own a Shimano Curado, Shimano Citica, Ardent XS1000, and now 3 Ardent XS600s and to this day the XS600s are my go to reel. Also if you want a super light rod a few months back I was at Cabelas and I guy I know there told me to look at the Black Carrot Stix, I think there in the $100 range, but I couldn't believe how light the thing was felt like a ice fishing jiggin rod.
