Went to squantz today in search of walleye or trout. Got there at 10 and saw a group of about 7 people out to the right of the beach and saw a trooper walking in. She said that there's about 3-4 inch consistency of ice. So headed out and ice was sketchy with random holes, some strange looking white ice spots, and anywhere where vegetation was there was a lot less ice than norm. Set up on the beach at about 10:20 and found 5 inches of black ice with a little puddle on

top. Fished til 12:30 and only had one flag pop but was a drop. No fish seen on the finder at this point. Traveled farther to the drop offs and fished about 26-32ft deep and picked up a 17" nice and fat brown trout on bottom with a shiner. Saw a few on the finder and had a nibble but no takers. Didnt see much more after that. Left at 4:30 and had a frightful walk back to the launch. Fish mustve been very very deep. Gonna try to get out tomorrow near home if the weather complies and gets to freezing point tonight s. |

Haven't been there since the day of this post. I'd assume there's ice but probably not much. Definitely would spud your way out if you happen to go. I may end up that way tomorrow. |

with the weather coming this week, you can bet there will be safe ice by next weekend. Some advice for early ice. put a few tip-ups along the shore in the cove just to the right of the beach in about 12" of water. I kill the trout in the shallows. |

Trout are December breeders. hey are in post spawn feeding patterns now so they are foraging in the shallows an all along the shores. Being stocked fish, they have the tendency to feed along the side of anything since that is how they fed while being raised. |

if anyone else would like to join me tomorrow, I would be glad to teach my techniques. It is always good to have company out on the ice. Squantz is in New Fairfield. I never ever get skunked on the lake and always manage to get some good quality fish in the spots I choose. |

There's only one Squantz in Connecticut !
Check the Connecticut Angler;s Guide (click on Ct Fishing top left corner to read it).
