After a heck of a day that took me far from home, I wanted to sneak in a bit of fishing with my micro rod. I have a new spincasting mini reel for this setup which goes nicely, and paired with some "new" 4 pound test mono, I was ready to go. I am going to ommitt the name of the area I fished since my dad usually only gets to fish once or twice a year and I hope to take him to this area tomorrow. In the interest of sharing though, here were conditions:
Slow-moderately running water over rock/mud ground surrounded by vegatation. Water temperature was cool. I was using a simple bait holder hook with a shank a bit longer than I would have liked with pieces of Canadian nightcrawler. No splitshot or float, this is one of my favorite setups for various fish species, especially trout. Water depth of about 2 - 5 feet.
The first fish I hooked into was an average size rainbow which jumped about 3 feet out of the water, I was really surprised and sort of watched it jump, expecting it to throw the hook. The second fish was an underwhelmingly sized brown which I promptly released. After that, I fished a bit farther out in the current and felt a solid hit and set the hook - surprisingly, it was a decent size yellow perch. The final surprise was a nice rainbow trout in the 1.5 pound range.
I'm a big fan of the Zebco microrod series; I got mine at Cabela's for 10 dollars three years ago or so and it's perfect for hard to access trout areas, especially when trying to avoid overarching brush. I was definitely dissapointed to see typical fishing waste in the area though - someone left a tangle of monofilament line, a fake grub, a jighead, some splitshots, and powerbait ON the jighead. One can't assume that all anglers know how to properly use the lures and bait and their disposal, but there's no excuse for leaving 10 feet worth of line tangled around the brush like that. I was able to get the whole thing thankfully. |
