So I've gathered a small group of talented anglers for 4th of july weekend to try our hands at shark fishing from shore with the new moon close by.. Gotta 5 gallon bucket full of chum. Fish guts, squid guts, pretty much the scraps and blood from most of the fish we've gotten over recent weeks. We have our general area picked out, specifc spot still undetermined. Plan to start chumming a little bit before high tide and to get our lines in the water at about high tide. As far as gear goes, i think we're probably gonna run 90lb or 135lb steel leader, 12/0 hooks, and either large chunks of bluefish or fresh dead oversized eels for bait. Anyone who's specifically targeted sharks from shore before, any suggestions?

On the television show River Monsters, the host, Jeremy Wade, suggested that you tie yourself off so you don't get dragged into the water. Wink Good luck!

good luck with that!and DEFINITELY keep us posted!
from my research.... that 90lbs steel leader is a little suspect...unless.. you guys are going after 3ft tiger sharks in a certain "EAST" location in a certain state... chumming and "dead over size eels" Wink Wink
here's a link to the "jersey boys".it's a good start..it might help

i spent the last six months researching shark fishing from the jersey shore.i have all the gear, locations picked out, visited a few bait shops and spoken to a few atlantic city fishermen
FYI: HARRAH'S CASINO has a safe, well lit public pier that i was told is great for night time shark fishing Surprised Surprised..... you guys might want to look into that.
i saw the pier wednesday and was planning on driving down next weekend to check out the night action Smile Smile
also saw about 20+ guys surf fishing(midday wednesday) across the bay in BRIGANTINE.i was told by the AC regulars that some of those guys were targeting daytime sharks.
im hoping to cut travel time in half(like you guys did) and find a few "RIGHT" spots as close as ASBURY PARK or LONG BEACH

Insomnia - Not farmiliar with any of those locations... Are they in Jersey?

I've also done lots of research on shark fishing from shore, though its not easy finding information thats from a local source. We'll be fishing here in LIS. Which from what I understand, we have very slim chances of sticking a triple digit fish, but its not impossible.

Our chum slick is going to be mostly bluefish based, so we'll be pitching large chunks of it and/or fresh dead eels if we can get our hands on them. Assuming all goes well and we end up going, ill definitely post about it.

Done a bit in the Carolinas years ago. Watched a ton. Big bulls roamed the back sound channels, and several types ocean side. Landing and releasing cleanly is the part where a good team comes in. Couple of things that may help. A yak and a brave sole to carry out bait and a chum bag works well. Drop a burlap sack of chum weighted down and also set the lines below the chum slick to get them off the shore. Thin burlap will degrade (or piss off whoever snags it). I'm not saying I want to paddle out into a channel that has bull sharks at night, but it works. If you use any type of surface float indicator, swap for a coke bottle with a glow stick in it. Sounds like a blast. Good luck, and post up if you have any luck!

now you guys REALLY got my attention! long island sound!!! Surprised
i assumed your group was headed up to rhode island next door and not jersey...they don't chum and use eels in jersey
from the chum and eel comment i figured it HAD to be point judith lighthouse read there was small tiger sharks up there on the east beaches
i drive a town car all over the tri-state so i try to recon with any local fishermen i meet Very Happy Very Happy
today i was in hyannis mass at the nantucket ferry dock.did my recon thing Smile ...was told by a charter boat deckhand... no sharks from the beach...need a boat Sad
wanted to swing through kingston ri and check out point judith but it was too early...dark and crazy foggy!
the towns i mentioned are all in nj... harrahs casino is in atlantic city..brigantine is the city next to AC (atlantic city)
the bays behind all those towns are chock full of different sharks and different sizes Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
downside is you need 4x4 and permit for many of the beaches and drive time is 2 to 4 hrs for the better spots
seriously..good luck with your spot.would be nice to get CT in the mix with jersey Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
the three and a half hour drive is a bitch but harrahs casino pier might be the best (safest) place for me..FOR NOW!!!!
LOL!LOL!
