What is being used on the light side for blues and stripers??... All my heavy gear is now gone, fly stuff too, and I'm looking for recommendations for areel to sit on a 7'Tica MH. Not crazy money, but good solid LIGHT salt spinning reels. I have a Shimano 4000, but I am sending that back into freshwater use. A later post in this thread warns of possible issues with older models (this one is), so a new reel is in order. Arthritis, shoulder, and back issues are finding me looking into lighter, but strong options. Any info appreciated.... tjd

Looked at Penn Slammer 360 and Sargus 4000 so far.

What Shimano is it? Stradic, Saros....ect...? Most of the 4000s that shimano makes could handle a decent stiper(35 to 40 inchs) the problem you run into is line capacity from shore. Thats one thing that shimano's in general lack on. Also until you break the $100 mark they arent really made for saltwater use( mainly sealed drag and bearing material).

Its a risk that you have to ask yourself if its worth it...That kind of gear makes a 25 to 30 inch fish a lot of fun, but is that fun worth the possoble loss of a big fish? I think it is cause if you do hook a big fish and land it on that gear just makes it that much better..

Thanks for the replies... Much appreciated... It's a Stradic... One of the 1st Generation white ones. I suppose it is primarily not purposed to live a salty life but I was just trying to get more use out of it and/or not wanting to spring for a new reel. It is a tough little bugger though.

GC... is that Penn 4000 by any chance the Sargus model? If so, What size fish can you crank in with that? I thought maybe a light rod like the Tica might pair nicely with the Shimano... So I was thinking of buying the rod, but maybe I should consider a reel for my 8' Tsunami instead of another rod? Anyone using Penn Sargus 4000 for salt applications? What size fish can it realistically deal with? There is always a possibility for a big fish I guess. thx

I have caught 20lb stripers with my stradic 2500 and MH all star rod. 4000 are perfect for stripers. However, I have heard of problems with the early stradics not doing well in salt.

yes, its a sargus, and dont worry its got plenty of muscle to handle the big boys. take care of it and it will do just fine in the salt.

If you have arthritis problems you might want to stick to using a heavy reel (so you can muscle them in PDQ), as I have found out with light tackle that you will need to spend a lot more time and effort working the bigger fish into net range (and that can really wear on already sore joints).
I go crabbing so I bring along a couple of poles with me (to kill time between trap checks) and because of the rust issue what I usually use are the cheaper reels, such as the ZEBCO (a model 733PL is on my casting rod this year) and the Pflueger reels (an Underspin pfl1810 model is on my spinning rod).
I use the Zebco with the 20lb test to bottom fish (mostly for fluke but if I happen upon some Striper action then I rig it up for them) and I use the Pflueger (with 12lb test line) to go after snapper blues (when they are running) and then I switch it over to bottom fishing when I reach my limit.
Because I am a crabber first I usually see the fishing side as gravy, so as a result I am willing to go with lighter tackle more for the fun of it than for the fish!
BTW three things I do to keep the rust at bay (for as long as possilble) are to lube up the reel but good (I am a lefty so I do it when I move the handle) strip off the line after every use, then I rinse it off the reel (with lots and lots of fresh water) dry it and then I put new line on the reel.

Went down to old lyme last week stayed half a day and took home 13 keepers using five traps.
I go back to the 1970's and I cannot remember them starting this early!
Trying to work it so I can go back down sometime this week, before the 4th of Juliers swamp the place.

I have never fished a sargus but the for cash seems smoother than a symtre. Basically it should have a higher price tag than it does and if I recall correctly it is was not designed by peen but by pfleuger. Just make sure to rinse after each use and I think you should be fine. I sold a few back in the day to customer and they spoke well of them. Check out the sports authority in manchester, they have some sargus 4000 combos on clearance for or less than the price of the reel separate. I think it is a 6'6" med heavy but don't quote me.

Picked one up this afternoon and slapped it on the 7'Tica. Went for the extra line capacity and liked the drag feel. Both were very solid working units. Sargus had the edge price wise, but the Slammer was a bit more of what I was looking for. More like the Penns I remember owning many years ago. Spooled 'er up with 30lb Suffix Braid. Now comes the good part.... Field Test. ... hopefully a few fish in the process. Thanks for taking the time to post up replies. tjd
