Hi, i've never been much of a rattle trap user but I know people catch fish on them. Its it too late in the year for them to be effective and if not what is a good size and brand to buy that won't kill my wallet???

I've used cotton cordells with good luck in the past. Whatever you do though do not buy a Cabela's brand lipless crank. I bought one and it was horrible. It went in the trash after only a few casts.

At this time of the year, what ever brand you decide to use, go with gold with a black back in 1/4 to 1/2 oz.. Like spinnerbaits, I find them to be most effective on overcast days fished over weeds where there is room to do so.

as much as I love cabelas, I've noticed their lures pretty much suck...I've had issues with their stick baits, and regular crank baits... awful action in the water. The cotten cordells I notice are on sale or in a discount bin at Dick's a lot. and pretty cheap compared to other brands. Also cheap at walmart. But stay away from the cabelas stuff.

I rarely use them but I always have a blue/silver one in my box. I fish them like a jig. Cast, reel up then let them free fall for a few seconds then repeat. Get hits on the way down.

I would say it might be a good time or maybe even a little too early. The fish will move out into deeper water after the spawn to chase shad. In my experience, they are still in the weeds close to shore, on the outside edge.

I dont get to fish clear, deep water much without a boat so most of my go to gear is
stuff for weeds/trees.

A steady retrieve can work too. It depends on what the fish want. Do what's working. I usually start with a steady retrieve and if that doesn't seem to be working I'll change it up a bit and see if that makes the difference.

If you have access to Bass Pro Shops online, they have their own brand and they work really well, and are reasonably priced. We have a couple different color patterns in the 1/2 ounce size. Just get the ones that mimic the bait fish you see the most where you go. We've done ok on both types of retrieve. Good luck Ryan.

Thought I'd let you all know I ended up buying a gold kinami hard baits series lipless crank in a gold color. I bought it because the rattle was like no other in the store. Loud as can be. Sure enough next day I landed a nice smally on it.

Great going! I've found the gold/black combination to be the best producer once the water warms up.
