Hi,
Appears HELL!
27 people on a 36 ft. boat.
There's no rocket science needed to figure that out!
The stability of that boat was compromised!
That boat was definitely overloaded!
Owner/captain of that yacht is in "Big Trouble "

I don't understand why there we people in the cabin while the boat was moving? It says that it went to take a right turn and it flipped. I really don't think it safe to be down below while the vessel is in motion...especially if gas fumes get down there somehow before the doors are closed, you can die of carbon monoxide. Anyways, I can almost guarantee that the captain didn't have 27 vests on board, such a shame. _________________ Steve |

Hi,
Vessels with interior cabins are seperated from the engine compartments and each have seperate ventilation systems that can't be crossed even when the vessel is underway.
Yes! ....I'd lay a solid bet down that there weren't 27 PFD's on board !
Without any doubt, in my professional capacity, that that boat's stability was compromised with overloading of passengers.
The wave caused it to incline beyond the point and ability for it to right itself ....so it rolled over!
Plus to carry that many passengers requires the captain to have a USCG License (A State issued recreational Boater's Safety Certificate doesn't cut it !) , and the vessel must be USCG inspected and rated with the number of passengers allowed.
Again that captain is in "Big Big Trouble" with 8 Federal violations that I see so far, just from reading the news reports.
STUPID Doesn't even come close, to describe what he did !
I'll lay another solid bet down, ....That he will never ever be allowed to drive another boat in his life time!

the captain said something about boats over 20 feet don't have a regulatory mandated capacity number. He said that smaller boats would have a plaque that would say max capacity. He kept saying how didn't break any federal regulatory laws about how many people on the boat. I don't know the difference between what he is saying and the square root of 56.78 but it really doesn't seem smart to put that many people on that small of a boat. |

Hi chud059,
Ha! ... Is he in for a "Big Surprise" -> All boats are regulated as to the number of persons they can carry per Federal Law + the required number of USCG certfied PFD's and USCG certfied/inspected Liferafts, based upon vessel size.!
Ask any US boat manufacturer and they'll tell you that they have Federal rules they have to abide by for every model of boat they make.
Overseas made vessels follow much the same under SOLAS rules and regs.
This guy has no idea what serious Deep Doo he's in !

I don't know how anyone could possibly figure this craft could support 27 people. If anyone moved it would cause the boat to list to one side or the other. It was doomed to capsize in even the calmest of water. Sadly children died because of the captains stupid and criminal actions. But there were other adults and parents on board didn't anyone question vessel safety? The cumulative intelligence on this death trap was about zero. You can be sure there weren't 27 PFD's on board ....there was no room !!!! I just hope this incompentent "captain" gets the book thrown at him and is charged with three counts of negligent homocide plus all the water craft violations. |

I'm from Chicago, so I'm probably more aware of boat rollovers than most people on the East Coast. One of the most infamous disasters in Chicago history was the rollover of the Eastland in the Chicago River:

Obviously the boat was overloaded. Probably safe bet that there weren't enough life vests on the boat for the number of people on board, but what gets me the most is that three children died...and they were in the cabin. I would DIE trying to rescue children. They were probably terrified and with 27 people on such a small boat for that many there's no way in hell there weren't adults in there with them that couldn't have helped. There had to be, where else would you stuff people on a boat that small? Shame on all the adults. Every last one. I do not feel bad for them for one second. |
