I have been ice fishing for many years. Recently I moved to Hampton, CT. Mansfield Hollow is right around the corner. I have never fished for Pike before. I am interested in information on ice fishing for Pike. Any information on tip up rigging, jigging poles and lures etc. would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

I'm not to far away from mansfield hollow, just a couple towns over. It's usually one of the first places to freeze over in the area. I've not had much luck there ice fishing for pike but many people have and the result can be quiet rewarding.
I use large bait on my tip-ups and I try not to set them to close to the bottom because pike look up for their feed. |

Fish on,
Do you use a wire leader near the hook? |

The answer is ALWAYS
Pike have teeth that can slice right thru heavy Mono like a hot knife thru butter
Also I'd recommend you use a lip grabber to haul the Pike out of the hole.
The Pike is still strong and lively and can seriously slash and cut your hand(s) without one

I totally agree with you Seadog a wire leader is a must when ice fishing for pike. I also started using a #8 cirlce hook last year to top off the leader but haven't really caught any good size fish on that rigging to really test it out. |

How well would the line on tip-ups work seeing how there are usually a type of rope line?? All my tip ups have this line, would I have better luck switching it to a strong mono?? |

Hi wrxblue05!
Answer is NO
For your main spool line, stay with the Dacron line -> When hauling in the line with a Pike on you'll have a much better grip and control
Mono will slide thru you hand and cut it badly if the Pike decides to make a hard run
A short heavy Mono leader between the Dacron and wire/hook (about 3 ft.) would be OK

i use a either 35 pound tyable wire leader, about 2 feet long, or about three feet of 50 pound flourocarbon leader material, and ALWAYS use a treble hook! if your using big baits like suckers or golden pond shiners use a quick strike rig, two treble hooks, one that goes through the nostrils and another behind the dorsal fin, that way you can set the hook almost immediately without gut hooking the fish, and use at least 30 pound dacron! |

Hi All!
pP1 is right on! -> There are other types of rigs for Pike but the ones he posted are the most popular.
Just remember that Pike are scavangers and will take fresh dead bait -> Yet alive will always do better!
