there were a bunch of them in that same small area. a week or so earlier we landed a 4-5 pounder there. (will post pics) the population (ct river) is steadily growing. people were even getting them through the ice two winters ago. i have only got them with worms but i am aware they hit lures often. |

one crowd claims you can't eat them, their fish turns to mush. The other crowd says you can eat them, that they are tasty. Word on the street is they absorb a large amount of mercury. In CT their are two populations the river and Scoville reservoir. If you can catch one out of the reservoir it might be worth trying. If you eat anything that was born and raised in the CT river in Connecticut you frighten me. |

Hi,
If that frightens you ...You sure don't want to eat anything that comes out of the Housatonic River !
Loaded with PCB's as well as Mercury !

I generally don't eat fish I catch and I wasn't planning on tasting a bowfin...just curious. Thanks for the info...maybe we'll see some bowfin recipes posted here some day. |

Wow what a website. Thanks again Jim and Sea Dog . I 'll spend some time reading up on bowfin. Maybe the state of Ct. should be considering them as a replacement for the Atlantic salmon program. |

I was at Keeney cove the other day fishing from shore and was throwing a top water popper that got BLOWN up by a bowfin. It came up and actually came completely out of the water when it hit it. Of course i wasnt paying attention at the time, but when i heard a big splash i looked back over and set the hook.
It was the first bowfin that i have ever caught and yes it is definitely a different looking fish. |
