Friday I headed back to the Pequonnock River for more trout action. Arrived at first destination just before 3pm and worked my way downstream.
At first destination I saw trout. Tried throwing a few Rapalas and let mealies and orange Power Bait sit on the bottom near them but couldn't buy a bite. Last lure I used was a 1" piece of a Creme soft plastic worm rigged with a single hook and weightless. Twitched it along the surface which resulted in 3 followers with 1 being a hit.
Next I went to the ballfields to find trout around there too but they would hardly hit. Landed 2 small rainbows with the weightless soft plastic and had a number of hits and followers.
Kept moving downstream and landed 3 rock bass and 2 bluegills.
Once I got to largemouth territory I switched over to a brown trout Original Floater F-7 and tried a number of retrieves. Only had 1 follow on a slow steady retrieve and had bluegills and rock bass tapping at it a lot while using it as a topwater. Caught 1 rock bass and 1 bluegill.
Checked out 3 spots at Bunnells Pond for largemouths and crappie but didn't see any signs other than bluegills.
Last stop was the lower tidal section at Glenwood Park. Herring were thick there and saw them making their way up the small dam. Black crowned night herons were just arriving too. Threw the F-7 out there and stuck with a steady retrieve which resulted in 1 rock bass and 3 white perch. 2 of the whites were small and the other was a 10" lower tidal keeper. A few times I saw schools of herring splashing on the surface in 1 area along the edge of the water as if stripers made it up river and were chasing them.
Hit the road just after 8pm.
Seeing the white perch were active is telling me that yellow perch, white perch, smallmouth, and largemouth action should be picking up soon on the Naugy. |
