Decided to look for some spawning pike this weekend, and since many bodies of water are closed, I decided to try Pachaug for the first time. I met up with Billybass and we got on the water about 7:30am. It was cold!!!! The temp was 28 degrees when we got out and any water/spray in the boat was freezing on contact. I was very hopeful though, as it seemed the timing was right for the spawn and we even had a full moon. I had picked up 2 dozen large shiners, so we even had good bait.
We only had till about noon so we stayed in some of the closer areas we had scouted on the map. We were looking for weedy coves with feeder streams and had a couple picked out to try. Everything seemed right, but we found no fish. This lake is very tough to fish. Almost all of the lake is 6' or less and the back of the coves had 2' or less. There is a 9' channel that runs most of the length, but it is not easy to stay in - especially not knowing the lake.
We fished about half of the lake with bait and lures, but got no bites. Very strange and surprising to me. I can only guess that they were in the half of the lake we didn't get to, and converging to spawn. At least I hope so.
Gonna try again this weekend and hit the other end. It should be easy finding and catch them this time of year, so I'm gonna give it another shot and cover the whole lake. Hopefully next week I'll have some pics.
We had a good time anyway and Bill is a cool dude. We are definately from the same mold. I was sorry I couldn't get him any fish, but look forward to hittin the water w/ him again. _________________ Go big or go home! |

Yeah I agree all the way, everything seemed perfect, shallow waters, nice coves ,never mind the live bait we had out we were also tossin everything in the planos,,,Flippers boat is set up perfect ,On the way down there he showed me some pics of his catches and after that I was pumped ,but do agree that the other end of that body of water is prob were the breeding will begin...It was freezing the first hour or two,but no big deal...we definetly jamed out half of that water and will try to finish the rest this weekend if possible,,,.....
Thanks again Flip,,,was good day anyway...anybody gets a chance to hook up with Flipper ,,you got a stand up dude to look foward to....And he definetly likes those pike ,,,,,,,,cant wait for that bantam monster you got |
