Im planning on taking my 4yr old son out to do some fishing in are 14ft boat this weekend in NIantic River and maybe CT River and looking for any tips or info you might be able to share with me as to where to fish depths baits to use etc? Not picky as to what we catch just really want t oget him some action. Never fished from boat here. I here that porgy are usually very easy to catch but ive never caught 1 and have no idea as to where to fish ro how to fish for them. Well any info will be greatley appreciated thank you |

I would stay away from both those spots on a weekend with the little guy and a 14 footer. BIG boats, yahoos and too much beer. Launch from 4 mile or Pleasure Beach as long as the seas are flat you can catch scup close by. I usually drift for scup to cover more water but it will probably be easier to anchor with your son.
4 mile (Old Lyme) leads you out into a bay and head right for the 2 rock islands (the Brothers) anchor up and drop down about 1in of sandworm on a hook with 3-4 oz of lead. Let it sit right on the bottom. To cover more water you can use a spinning rod and cast out a bit and slowly drag it back to you.
Pleasure Beach is in Waterford and leads you into Jordans Cove. There are rock piles across the bay (High Rock) and you can anchor up there in about 20fow and fish for porgy. High rock is visible but there is another one south of it as well that is under water, they both should hold fish.
I hope this helped. Good luck and have fun. |

I agree with ripline. The Ct River will be filled with boats and will make fishing with a youngster in a small boat unpleasant to say the least. I just want to add that be aware 4 Mile River launch can be difficult to use in low water as its very shallow. Just avoid, say an hour on either side of dead low. The Brothers is a close , safe area to fish. |

thank you guys so much for sharing, ive always fished from shore and very excited to get out in the boat a little nervous to but should be lots fo fun. Think ill wait to go out till during the week next week so there isnt as much traffic out there to deal with thanks for the heads up. Also i have permission to put in at Giants NEck beach and looks like some islands right out in front of there not far from shore have any of you guys ever fished around there? I know where FOur mile boat launch is to me and my son have done very good there in the past during high tide on the smaller blues lots of fun though on light tackle and keeps the little guy interested. Well thanks again i really appreciate the tips- good luck out there fishing |

i would recommend using a sandworm and just drift, you are sure to catch some scup and sea robins |

I fish solo in a canoe and I dont even go near the river on the weekend now that the yahoo's are out, though, I'm lucky enough to have days off during the week. Fish the coves and on off days till you're totally comfortable. I did marine fire/rescue on the shoreline for a long time and it can go bad quickly....and it's rarely the fault of the poor guy just sitting there fishing. Keep the little guy buttoned up in floatation, find some good safe spots, and you're on the way to cultivating a lifelong fishing buddy. My daughter is 16 and still blows off her friends to go out with me.....sometimes. _________________ Dave..... I can be a pain in the bass. |

i fish with 14-16ft boats around there often. i launch out of pleasure beach and chug over to the west side of millstone power plant theres a big bell bouy out there i anchor up around there and catch porgy seabass sea robins galore. then drift . there are plenty of short fluke around there. cant keep em but they put up a great fight on light tackle. couple dozen sandworms will get you plenty of action. i start fishing when the water is high and fish until it drains out. good luck when are you going ? exactly ? maybe you can follow us out there. |
