Hi everyone, my name is James and I live in Windsor. You can usually find me spring fishing for shad and stripers on the Farmington and CT rivers around Windsor. During the summer I switch over to large mouth fishing on the local lakes and ponds. Can't wait to get that first shad of the season! |

Hey, James. I haven't caught any shad, yet. Are they good eating or just good bait? _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Hi Phil,
Hello James, welcome!
Shad are excellent eating!
They are boney though and you need to learn how to fillet them properly.
There's a very few commercial Shad fishermen out of Haddam, Ct. still and there's a fellow (in Haddam) that sells the Shad fillets as well as Smoked Shad.
The roe (caviar) is a particular delicacy which I relish very much
The Penn. Dutch have a slow cook method on a cedar plank that is super as the slow cook method melts the bones much like salmon.
Haven't looked -> but there may be a video on youtube on how to fillet them.
As for recipes -> I have a couple that I have to dig out!

Hi,
Yeap! There is a video on youtube on ..... "how to fillet Shad".
As I said -> It is a bit involved.
Best to scale the shad 1st before you fillet it.
My Uncle Ed loved Shad and was very good at filleting them.
Takes me a lot longer then him.
Delicious!

Thanks guys, hope to see some of you out on the water.
PECo - I don't eat them but know of people who like the roe. I am mostly catch and release but keep an occasional one to chunk for striper. The shad put up a good fight that will keep you coming back for them. |
