Do you plan on chunking or plugging?

guess i would like something somewhat universal, i just like to fish in general, large or small.. is it better to set up for one style?

I don't know of any rod that would be meant for both chunking and plugging.

i would say chunking .. live baits bunker mack etc..but i would most likely end up picking up one of each.. but first will be for chunking.

You can get a set up that will do both. I would get a rod that is rated for 2 - 6 ounces and medium fast action with 15 - 30 lb test line and use 30 lb braid. As far as reels go something like a Penn Battle but must say for using bait a bait runner is what I would want so maybe a Penn Spinfisher V bait runner. If your interested in anon bait runner in Penn Battle or Spinfisher V I have 1 of each slightly used for sale. A Tica rod is a decent rod for plugging and will handle throwing chunks.

You need two rods, one for chunking and one for plugs.
That are what I have (cabelas ss reel with rod and a w&m 8' medium fast)

Totally agree 2 is a better choice, just stating that for now 1 can suffice. You don't need an expensive rod for chunkinv but for plugging all day you really want something as light as possible but still strong and that typically brings the price up!

I can relate to the OP as I myself have been getting more and more interested in surf casting and chunking as I've gotten older. Saltwater as a whole to me is a little intimidating with everything being more expensive, the margin for error on this anglers wallet is small lol.

I have a Daiwa rod(10') and okuma Stratus ST-50 combo
For chunking. If you want I can sell it to you for $50.

The Penn Battle is nice for a reel under $100. I've been fishing some of the new SF Vs, which have also been suggested, but that will eat up most of your budget. If you surf fish a lot, the salt will tear up lower end gear. The Spinfisher V has a completely sealed drag and lots of stopping power. You'd have to go with an inexpensive rod but something like an Ugly Stick is inexpensive, next to indestructible and fine for chunking. At some point you could look at upgrading for a lighter rod better casting ability. Sounds like Fishfinder may be able to save you some on a reel that new might price your outfit out of your budget.

Yeah, both the battle and spinfisher v are a few months old. I ended up getting a Van Staal for my in water fishing and that replaced 1 of my spin fishers and in turn pushed out my battle. I'll let the battle go for $60 filled with power pro slick 8 30 lb braid. I'll let the spinfisher go for $90 filled with the same. I also have a Okuma Coronado bait feeder I'd let go for 40 filled with the same. Its older but still works great.
