Got there around 3 pm. Used a diamond jig on one rod n bunker on another. All I was landing was sea robins on both of them. When I decided to cast my last piece of bunker landed a nice keeper fluke that was the biggest ive ever caught yet. It took me by surprise coz I never thought I could land a fluke on that big piece of bunker. Besides that all was sea robins anyways better than getting skunked. Heading back to ny to try my luck with some blues at jamaica bay. Was there last week and was thankful that I didnt catch a single skate. Seems they are gone.

sea robins are supposed to be delicious actually, if you catch a big one try keeping it & eating it. I've been hearing this for a while now but i've somehow never caught one lol

Why not ???

Lobsters, Crabs, and "all bottom feeding fish" (fluke, flounder, skates, sea robin, even Cod, Hake, eels, tautog, black sea bass, wolf fish, tile fish etc, etc.) are bottom scavengers!
Let's add Octopus, squid, all types of clams, sea urchins, and some ocean snails.

.........All have sweet meat to eat!........

Want ugly to eat that is a delicious delicacy ? -> Try Monk fish (aka Goosefish) - When poached tastes like lobster.

I've eaten sea robins since I was a kid! ....... "UGLY is GOOD EATING" ! Thumbs Up Very Happy

Lobsters, crabs - delicious. Clams, mussels, oysters, razor clams, sea clams - fantastic. As far as fish go, I've tried eel, skate, and yes, sea robin, as you can see in the photo in my recent post. They're a lot of head, so not much meat for even a larger one. But nice white meat, a little on the tougher side, but so is a doormat sized fluke. Still flakes apart nicely. I still have yet to try a dogfish, though i hear when the proper care is taken, its quite nice.

SeaDog - Monkfish is absolutely fantastic. Another member of the sculpin family worth trying is the Oyster Toadfish. Also known as "Oyster Crackers" in some areas. They don't get very big, and like all sculpins, have a larger head, so the amount of meat you get off a fish isn't a whole lot, But boy is it tastey.

Hi JS,

Dogfish is what traditional British (Fish and Chips) are made from.
Have to soak the fillets in saltwater a few times to get rid of the urea in the flesh.
Once that's done .... batter and deep fry -> DELICIOUS ! Thumbs Up

I was aware that it was used in the british fish and chips. I was not aware that you could soak it in salt water to cleanse the flesh. My understanding was to bleed immediately, gut, and skin, then transfer right to ice. Whats holdin me back from tryin it was the fear of the meat being ruined from improper preparation. But ill give it a go!

Tried a stargazer before and the meat is sweet and tender.
Seadog forgot to mention that Striped bass is also a bottom feeder.

If your looking for oyster toad fish, u catch lots of them by battery park in ny,
Those things are mean, coz when u try to get the hook out of them they bite on the pliers like a dog and dont let go, Watch out for their teeth,

I worked on a double otter trawler a few years ago and one of my jobs was to clean the monkfish tales and box em up. I was told that it's poor mans lobster but never had a chance to try it.

Think sea robins are ugly, wait till you catch a monkfish, LOL Very Happy

I agree with dogfishhead! We caught a monk fish by mistake while fishing for black fish last year and that is one UGLYYY fish (look them up on google images)! That same day I read they are great eating, but of course i read that AFTER we threw it back haha).
