I met up with PECo (Phil) and mep21 (Mark) at Lake Basile at around 7:30 this morning. It was an overcast sky all day and the air temperature was pretty mild for this time of year. We made the trek down the bike path from the parking area and were surprised when we got to the Lake that most of the brush and rocks at the South end of the Lake were gone and in its place was a sandy "beach"
Mark and I launched our boats from the beach area into the 58deg water at about 8:15am while Phil fished from the shoreline because he had to leave earlier than we did.
We made our way around the shoreline because it seemed that a majority of the fish were hanging tight to the shore. I threw a creature bait for a short while with only a few nibbles. I ended up only catching fish on a wacky senko. Mark caught several fish on a frog as well as a spinnerbait but I just decided to keep throwing the senko. I probably should have switched it up but I was being lazy. At the end of the day I landed seven fish on the senko with the largest being a fat 15" largemouth. Only one of those fish was caught out in the middle of the Lake. The rest were within about three feet of the shoreline. Here's a pick of my biggest one
The Lake Basile association was setting up for a Bar-B-Que as we were heading out around 12:45pm. They had some great tunes cranking on the stereo for a bit while we were fishing. It looked like they were ready for a good time but unfortunately we couldn't stay. One of the guys confirmed that the Association had put in a lot of work to improve the access at the South end of the Lake by adding the sandy "beach" area. It was great to get out there and catch a few bass.

Nice fish Dawg. Wow, Phil actually was land bound huh, never thought I ever hear that!! LOL

Yeap, Wade, I'm really not a fan of fishing from shore. My apologies to those who love it, but I think it kinda sucks.  It's really frustrating not being able to hit all of the spots that you can see. Derek didn't mention that while he and Mark were getting ready to launch their kayaks into the lake (at 8:00 am, actually, Derek), I landed the first fish from the shore with my trusty minnow jig:
Derek and I measured it on his Hawg Trough. It was only 11-15/16 inches long.  While he and Mark were paddling around the lake, I was stuck on the shore.  I spent some time collecting a bucketful of trash, including the discarded bucket, before I landed another fish:
Did I mention that my minnow jig is 12 inches long?  Anyway, I took off at 9:30 am, after fighting that monster of a fish onto the shore. Mark walked with me back to the parking lot, because he had broken his paddle and I had a couple in the trunk of my car. While I had landed only two short largemouth bass in 1-1/2 hours, he had already boated seven and developed a pretty good case of bass thumb. Plus, he had even gotten some with a topwater frog!  I plan to be on a boat the next time that I go fishing.

Oh, and thanks for the link to the courant.com article, Derek. I love me them "large-mouthed bass".
