Hi All!
Well its STARTED!
The open water season is pretty much over and now the wait for ice to form!
To some its like being a drug addict without a supply!
Already many have that terrible itch and no way of scratching it!
Now would be a good time to get depth charts of the waters you want to fish and plan out where and how to set out your tip-ups or rods.
I usually start the season by putting out my sets from shallow to deep in a straight line from shore. When I see that certain sets seem to be producing, I then shift those that aren't to the left and right of those that are.
Since we're allowed 5 set ups here in Ct. -> I bait 2 with minnows and 2 with waxies/mousies/spikes and reserve the last as a jigging hole.
The fish will tell you what they want and then I adjust my bait accordingly.
The only exception is when I'm on waters that have Pike and I'll go to a 3 - 1and 1 combination -> 3 rigged for Pike -> 1 for Trout/Panfish -> and 1 for jigging.
FYI: The cost of Pike size bait is going to be expensive this season -> So while there is still some open water it would be a good idea to find where you can catch some Goldies/Fall-Fish/Suckers. Small creeks, streams, and back waters are good places to look.
Best regards,

Um, I'm not ready to concede the closing of open water season yet, SeaDog! What do you think, Kira? _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Hey Phil!
I said -> Open water season is pretty much over with -> Not Closed!
For most anglers that is true!
There's always the die-hards that will keep going till the ice forces them to quit
Been waiting though to hear if your planning to attach an ice breaking bow to one of your kayaks
Best regards,

I was up at my parents place in Brooklyn and saw the water starting to freeze up. I'm jealous of you guys getting to get out on the ice. |

I was putting away my kayak for the winter. I did get tempted to put in but left my paddles back home in Norwalk. I wanted to put in the Qinebog (sp) after seeing a couple guys out there. |

TurtleKiss (aka Kira) and I got out on Millers Pond today. Until the wind rose at 2:30 pm, it was beautiful out there. I think I might have even dozed off for a few minutes in the sunshine. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

I believe CT allows 6 set-ups, unless I am reading it wrong. If so, I have been putting 1 extra in for the past 30 years and getting away with it.
From the 2010 anglers guide p.12
"ICE FISHING Not more than six tip-ups, floats (bobbers), similar devices,
or hand-held jigs or any combination thereof not exceeding six in the
aggregate may be used at one time. Persons under sixteen years of age
may use not more than two devices. Not more than three baited hooks,
with or without attractors, or three ice flies, or three artificial lures, or
any combination thereof not exceeding three in the aggregate may be
used with each tip-up, float (bobber), or similar device or hand-held
jig. Devices must be personally attended. The name and address of the
user must be legibly stamped on or attached to all devices."
I could be wrong, but DEP has never bothered me about it, and as I read the regulations I see 6. |

Hi mi!
Your right!
I was thinking of Mass. where I do a fair amount of ice fishig (Trout-Pike-Smelt) and only allow 5 devices.
Guess we're lucky here in Ct. being allowed 6 devices -> because in Michigan they're only allowed 2 lines, in Illinois only 3, in Wisconsin 2 and in Minnesota 2.
For a small state -> Ct. waters get hammered pretty hard with each fisherman allowed 6 devices.
You'd think the Great Lake states would allow more than 2 or 3 with ice fishermen having access to more lakes and ponds + big waters then we have here in Ct.
A lot depends on the state your in and what number fishing devices are allowed -> how many hooks per device -> and age can be a factor also.
Again -> whether it's 5 or 6 -> count your blessings your in Ct. or Mass. and not in Mich., Ill, Min., or Wis.
Best regards,

Most states must be 5. When I look at buying tip-ups, they all come in sets of 5 whether they are new or used. |
