Hi,
How to stay Dry and Warm Icefishing ! ...
1st and formost -> Wear "NOTHING" made with Cotton in it
FACT .... Cotton, is well known as the "DEATH" fiber by all outdoor people in cold climates.
It absorbs and holds moisture and will keep you cold !
So stay away from anything that has any cotton whatsoever in it.
Feet:
Nothing worst then having cold feet on the ice !
Dry warm feet will help the body overall to stay warm.
Polypropelyn socks with 1-2 pair of heavy Wool socks over them will keep you dry and warm and wick persperation away.
Also wear good insulated waterproof boots.
Heat packs in bottom of boot near toes work very well.
Underwear:
Polypropelyn (2 or 3 ply) will keep you dry and warm as it traps air and wicks moisture away.
Silk (2 or 3 ply) is also very good -> Lighter and non-itchy.
Clothing:
Layering is the key !
Wool is best as it will keep you warm even if it gets wet !
Multi-ply synthetics also very good.
Outerwear:
Synthetics (Such as snowmobile suits) -> Water and wind proof.
Wool outerwear
Head, Face, and Hand protection against Frostbite:
Good insulated hat (NO Cotton !)
Good insulated waterproof gloves (No Cotton !)
Balacava or Scarf to protect Face
NOTE:
Again .... Stay away from anything made of or with Cotton, (Cahartt bibs or coats are made of Cotton) -> and if you break thru the ice Cotton will soak up water like a sponge and drag you down !
If you live near an "Army Navy Store" you can find lots of military grade cold weather clothing, boots, etc. at very reasonable prices !
I have 2 pairs of Chech Army 100% wool pants and they are very warm and wind proof !
Stay Warm -> Stay Safe
