Let me start a new thread for action this year. I fish from shore and do it often no matter what the temp is pretty much as long as I can keep ice off my tips for more then 5 minutes. Havent been getting a thing since mid January but finally at least got a good hit tonight. I was in a daze slow crawling a pre rigged 7" sluggo and wham I got slammed and dropped. Freaking woke my arse up thats for sure. Started at 5 and gave up at 8:3o when the rain and sleet started coming down. Planned on staying until the 1 that got away was at my feet! Dont think I can take much more of the skunk! Rolling Eyes

Nice fish! I've never caught a shad. Is that an American Shad or a Hickory Shad? American Shad are out of season on the lower Housy, right? How do you tell the difference between the two?

No idea Phil. Crest Daddy looked it up and said its a Gizzard Shad. Ive never caught 1 either but last year a little later then now a few guys were catching these up here on the Housy, well actually the 1 I seen caught was snagged also on a plugs trebles come to think of it. I do know people do fish for Shad up here around April but not sure if this is the exact species of Shad they are targeting. I snagged that 1 right in the dorsal fin and it never gave a fight at all. I thought I just had some smegma on and in the heavy current of the strong Naugatuck river. While I was there I also seen something (maybe a snapping turtle) take off a good chunk off of a sucker fish. I didnt see a turtle but its the only thing I cant think of that could do that much damage with the exception of a bluefish and I Hiiiiiiiiighly doubt there are any of those around here now! Weird stuff tonight! At least I beat the skunk or does snagging a fish not count? LOL

Hi,

Here's a Shad ID plate I found that will help.

It's the famous American Shad that is targeted on the Connecticut River, on their spawning runs in April.

Fished for them on the Palmer River, Ma with my uncle as a kid and also the Mattabesset River, Ct. behind the ball fields where the old Atena complex use to be in Middletown.

Lots of fun and very hard fighters !

Fresh baked and smoked Shad is delicious as is the Roe.
There's a Shad festival each year in Essex, Ct. as well as Windsor, Ct. Thumbs Up
