I've got a question. What would you use in a place that is relatively small, maybe no more than 5 acres, shallow and very grassy that has pike in it? Would you stick with top waters and soft plastics because everything else is just going to pull up grass. Appreciate any input _________________ Yankees are like snitches...a dying breed |

The Bass Pro Walking Frog is supposed to be a good one for pike. Spinnerbaits are very good in grass on a med/heavy rod with braided line. Probably big swimbaits rigged weedless or vertically jigged in voids in the weeds would produce.I've never used one but I've heard those weedless spoons are good too. I know Cabela's has them. A steel leader will help rip through the weeds and hopefully keep your baits Get a big one! |

Thanks. I tried a 5" swimbait and a scumfrog. I'll try a spinnerbait next time,I didn't have any with me when I went. It's just the grass is so thick just below the surface. I'll try again. I think someone is dumping the pike in there because they were never in there before. _________________ Yankees are like snitches...a dying breed |

Get in there at first light speed around it in a boat to stir it all up, then toss a Big a$$ top water bait to the weed lines.. _________________ ..I play nice with everyone.. |

Here's the thing. The place is maybe 5 acres. No boats allowed. But there's plenty of shore access. The only clear spots where there aren't any weeds or grass is near a small damn(spillway) and this other spillway that feeds into the pond _________________ Yankees are like snitches...a dying breed |

You should probably (if you don't have it already) get some braided line at least 65 lb, test for that kind of fishing. Make sure you re-tie alot too because thats alot of stress and abrasion on the line. |

I've got 20. I wont be able to fit 65 on my spool. My reel is one of the low-pro baitcasters with the narrower spool . Maybe I an get it on my one of my spinning rods _________________ Yankees are like snitches...a dying breed |

20 might be a little low but I think 65 is high...just my opinion. Weeds should not give you an abraision problem either. Definently run a leader of some sort...high pound test mono or wire if you can. Braid hates teeth.... _________________ You can play on your computer and hang out with your girlfriend if you want....Im gonna go fishin. |

I use 50 lb Power Pro on 2 of my pike rods, and 30 lb Power Pro on the rest of my bass rods when using them for pike. I also like about a 3 ft 50 lb fluro leader with a swivel while using all of my pike lures.. _________________ ..I play nice with everyone.. |

Thanks again. Should I just rip lures right through the grass or try to hit the very few clear spots near grass in that place _________________ Yankees are like snitches...a dying breed |

Power Pro is real nice cause it has a small diameter and is super strong too. I run 50lbs mono for pike so I agree with the 50 floro also. They would only be good for a one or two time use but Sizmic makes a really good frog for heavy grass and pads...I love them. Pike and pickeral do too. They have a 5 inch that should suit your needs well. You can drop them into the open spots and they still look pretty natural. _________________ You can play on your computer and hang out with your girlfriend if you want....Im gonna go fishin. |

Yea 65 is probably overdoing it. I use 30 lb. SonicBraid in the river, but shit. If the weeds are as bad you say they are in this place, and you get a gator that wants to run like crazy , your gonna have alot of extra weight on your line via ripped up weeds. Thats were I was goin with that. |
